We give everyone a quick run-down, though it’s clear that Damon and Cal already know what’s going on, Izzy and Enzo do not. They go from looking neutral to downright furious, and I’m glad I’m not the only one.
“Well then,” Izzy speaks for the first time, her eyes trained on me. “Let’s go get your girl back and kill a bunch of assholes, huh?”
Her words should scare me, having to take a life, but they don’t.
How could they, when I know if I don’t take theirs, they’ll no doubt take Savannah’s, and I’ll let that happen over my dead body.
We head to the two cars. Logan, Damon and Cal get into the first one, while I take the one with Enzo, Izzy, Cole, and Lana.
Once we’re seated, Cole leans over to whisper, “Are you sure you’re up for this, Harl?”
I pull back to look him dead in the eyes. “What if it was Lana?”
He eyes me before nodding. Yeah, he knows I don’t have a choice in this, just like he wouldn’t if it was Lana who was in danger.
“So,” Enzo says, looking toward Lana in the rearview mirror as he puts the car into drive. “You must be my new cousin.”
I glance around Cole to look at the girl in question, and she tilts her head. “I don’t think that’s how it works.”
Enzo snorts. “It sure as fuck does in this family.” He gesturestowards Izzy, who sits in the passenger seat. “There’s noin-lawin this family. Izzy is my sister. You’re my little cousin’s girlfriend, which makes youmycousin now too. Plus, I’ve heard all about you from your boy Cole over there, and I think you’ll fit in perfectly.”
Cole groans under his breath, and while I’d usually love this type of banter, I can’t enjoy anything right now.
And I won’t until I have Savannah safely in my arms, right where she belongs.
SIXTY-SEVEN
SAVANNAH
Once my father leaves,I get up and pace the room, unable to keep still. This is all so fucked.
So, so fucked.
My father’s going to sell me to one of his friends. Like, for real. It’s not just a threat this time. This time, it’s real, and it’s happening.
And Harley. Fuck, Harley will lose his mind. When I get to my father’s friends, there will be no finding me. It doesn’t matter how much work Harley puts into getting me back, or how connected Logan is, I’ll be lost to them forever.
I’ll be lost to myself.
I’ve dealt with a lot of shit in my twenty-one years on this earth, but that will be the final straw. I’d rather take my own life than let someone own me in the way he will. Maybe it’s something I should have done a long time ago. At least that way, my father wouldn’t have had any power over me. Harley would never have been put in danger, and he wouldn’t be left to mourn what we could have become. He wouldn’t be left to mournme.
I’m strong, I know I am, but I don’t think anyone is strong enough to endure the horrors I know I’ll be subjected to.
Tears run down my face at just the thought of what I’ll have to do, but what other choice do I have, really?
The walls feel like they’re closing in on me, and there’s no way out. My chest is caving in, and my heart shatters at the thought of never seeing Harley again. All hope I had earlier of escaping this place is gone, replaced with a bone-deep dread of what my fate will be.
I’ve always known my life would end because of my father, but meeting Harley and then becoming close with Logan changed something within me. It made me think that maybe therewasa way out, that maybe I wouldn’t always be in this situation.
I should have known better.
I should have known this wouldalwaysbe the way. I should have paid more attention to my father’s threats. I should have been better, done as I was told, and not gone off track.
Maybe then I wouldn’t feel like I was looking down the end of a barrel like I do now.
I turn to look out of the window, staring down at the city below me. I’ve always liked New York. It feels different here. Busy.
I like how there are millions of people, how you can just get lost in the crowd.
