“I guess you wanna know what I’ve been working on, huh?” Logan asks Sav with a sigh, and she nods.
He takes a deep breath, as though bracing for somethingand it’s a weird sight. I’ve never seen him so unsure of himself, it’s fucking weird.
“Things with your father are far worse than I originally thought, and the deeper I looked, the more horrifying it got. He’s not only got friends in high places, but he has his hands in almost every horrible thing you can imagine. Drugs, guns, people—he’s involved in all of it.”
I watch as Savannah takes in this information, but she doesn’t look shocked. Disgusted? Yes. But not shocked.
“You already knew?” I ask her.
She slowly nods before leaning to the side, grabbing the folder my mom gave her from down the side of her seat.
“There are things in here which alluded to it, but I didn’t know for sure, and I don’t know all of the details. He’s threatened to sell me before, but I thought it was just a threat, I didn’t realize it was anactualpossibility…” She trails off, and I have to clench my fists to avoid jumping up and punching something.
Christ, I really fucking hate the man she calls a father. What sort of piece of shit not only gets involved in that type of thing but also threatens to sell his own daughter? His own flesh and blood? It’s sickening. Vile. Something I didn’t think actually happened in real life. Clearly, I was wrong.
So damn wrong.
“So, what do we do?” I ask Logan, trying to focus on what can be done about this shit instead of spiraling about all of the shit Ican’tcontrol.
He exhales slowly and leans forward in his seat. “About the entire operation he’s a part of? Not much right now. It’s too big to take care of in one step, and the entire thing is like a Hydra—cut off the head, and it grows right back. The thing is, your dad isn’t the head, Sav. He’s just one of many who contribute, which is why I’ve tried to hold off on doing anything with your father.
“I’ve been keeping an eye on all of his electronics, and there’s someone watching him day to day, but I didn’t think he would send someone after you the way he did. I’m sorry you got hurt, but I think we know enough now to be able to deal with your fatherandtake the whole thing down. We just need a few weeks to finalize everything before we can move forward.”
What the…
“Why do you sound like you’re in the Mafia or something?”
Logan snorts. “Or something,” he mutters under his breath and goes to stand. “It would be a lot safer for you to stay with us, but I know you won’t go for it, so I’ve upgraded your locks and put some security measures in place.”
He leaves, and I turn toward Savannah, who’s staring shellshocked at the seat Logan was just occupying.
“Hey, you okay?”
She slowly turns to face me and blinks a couple of times. “Did you understand any of that? What’s he planning on doing? And why did he keep sayingwe? And who does he have watching my father?”
I slide closer to her and tug her toward me, enveloping her with my arms. I press a kiss to her hair and murmur, “Honestly? I have no idea, and I don’t really think I want the answers. I trust Logan to know what he’s doing, so I think we should let him do whatever he needs and hope that soon, everything will get better.”
“I really hope so.”
Me too baby, me too.
FIFTY-NINE
SAVANNAH
As soon asmy feet hit the floor and I spin around to where I know I’ll find Logan, he surprises me by gripping my wrist and dragging me toward his door, his signature glare on his face.
“What’s wrong?” I ask, and if possible, he glares even harder.
“If you and Harley have sorted your shit out, then you don’t need to climb through my window anymore, you can use the front door like a normal person.” He opens his door and pushes me out of it. “If you’re gonna be sneaking into anyone’s room, it’ll be his.” He points to a door at the end of the hall before closing the door in my face.
“Good to see you too, asshole,” I mutter under my breath.
He’s been different lately. Not that he’s ever been a ball of sunshine because the guy is seriously wound tight, but he’s been getting agitated for no reason these last couple of weeks and has been spending a lot more time staring at his phone. Maybe it’s something to do with the girl I saw him watching?
Who the hell knows when it comes to Logan.
I head down the hall and let myself into the unfamiliar room. Unlike Logan’s room, Harley’s actually bothered to make this placehis. There are spots of color in places, whether it be the blue comforter or the deep green chair in the corner of the room, he’s found a way to somehow make the space look clean, yet adding a little brightness in places.
