I roll my eyes, even though he can’t see me. “I don’t have one. I took an Uber.”
“You don’t have a car?”
“That would mean too much freedom.”
His steps falter, and I worry for a moment that he might drop me, but he quickly rights himself, giving my legs a squeeze. “How? If you don’t have enough freedom to have a car, then how did you afford an Uber to get here?” he asks almost hesitantly, and I swallow the lump in my throat, notused to telling anyone about how much my father controls my life.
“My tutoring gig,” I say, and lick my dry lips. “A lot of the students don’t want their parents to know how much they’re struggling, and so some of them prefer to pay in cash. Since my father only gives me a minimal allowance for necessities, it’s all I have.”
He curses under his breath before heading toward his car and unlocks it before carefully placing me inside.
“You know I could have walked,” I state, and he grins wickedly.
“I know, but I liked carrying you.”
“You’re so weird.”
He snorts out a laugh, and just before he closes the door, he says, “You know it, little devil.”
FIFTY-EIGHT
HARLEY
Savannah is sleepingin the passenger seat as I pull up outside of her building, and I take a second to just breathe the moment in. Things have been crazy, and there’s a lot of shit I wished had happened differently, but this moment? This momentright now makes everything seem almost worth it.
I pull out my phone and send a text to Logan, telling him to meet me at Sav’s place. He responds right away with a thumbs-up emoji, and I heave a sigh.
I don’t know what he’s been working on, which is why I want him to meet us. We need to know what the fuck is going on and figure a way out of this for my girl.
I reach out and tuck a stray piece of her hair behind her ear, letting my fingers gently trail over her cheek. She’s so beautiful, and I’m a lucky son of a bitch
But I want more. I wantallof her.
And that starts with sorting out the situation with her father.
Savannah is special. She’s always been someone I wasdrawn to, and whether it was under the pretenses of hating her or before that, when I was pestering her constantly, it doesn’t matter. I’ve always wanted her, and I still do.
I don’t think it’s going to stop any time soon.
I’m in too deep with her.
I see Logan’s car pull into the parking lot and gently tap Savannah on the shoulder. “Wake up, Sav.”
She blinks her eyes open and looks around blearily. “We’re back?”
I nod. “We’re back, and Logan’s here. I think it’s about time we learn what he’s been working on, huh?”
It seems to take her a moment to process my words, but when it does, she sits upright. “He’s here?”
I tilt my head towards the windscreen, where I can see the man in question getting out of his car. Savannah undoes her seatbelt before flinging the door open and bolting from the car, hurrying toward Logan. There’s no embrace today, she just grins in a carefree way I haven’t seen on her face for so long.
At least, not directed at me.
I’d be jealous if I wasn’t so happy about her finally allowing people close to her.
I follow after her, nodding to Logan as we head up to Savannah’s dorm. Things would be a hell of a lot easier if she would just stay with us, but once my girl’s mind is made up on something, there’s no changing it.
We reach her floor, and she unlocks the door before letting us inside. We’re all silent as we each take a seat, but when Savannah tentatively sits down next to me, I realize she’s gotta be uncomfortable as hell.
