That’s it.
That’s all.
Most people would’ve missed it.
Evie doesn’t.
Neither does Falcon. His gaze shifts briefly to me, and he gives the smallest nod, as if to say she knows exactly what she’s doing.
A smile ghosts across Evie’s face, as though that tiny movement is more than enough for today.
She isn’t asking for trust. She’s earning it. One quiet moment at a time.
Falcon gradually sets the lead rope over the stall rail and steps back. The mare notices, but doesn’t panic.
“I’ll be in the south barn if you need another pair of hands,” he says.
He leaves without another word.
Leaning against the stall door, I think about what I’ve just witnessed.
Maybe that’s all trust has ever been.
Not something you demand or something you’re owed. Just showing up, day after day, gentle enough that eventually the other person stops waiting for you to leave.
I watch Evie standing in the morning light, talking softly to a frightened mare who isn’t ready to believe she’s safe.
I smile, chest full and warm.
Yeah.
She’s got this.
And I’ve got her.
Chapter 15
Evie
Gabriel drives us to Havenridge for the family meeting later that afternoon. It’s a short drive, just over the ridge to the adjacent property. They share a boundary line that can be reached on horseback, but we decided to drive.
He keeps one hand on the steering wheel as the truck rumbles over the ranch road, while the other finds mine, the way it has a habit of doing now.
I thread my fingers through his, and he smiles without taking his eyes off the road.
I think back to this morning. I don't think I'll ever get over what he did. Not because he bought me a horse, but because he saw me.Reallysaw me.
He hasn’t tried to make me fit into his life. He’s quietly made room for mine.
My father always tried to decide who I should become. Gabriel simply embraced who I already was.
I glance across at him. He’s humming quietly along with the radio.
He catches me looking.
“You keep looking at me like that,” he says, “and we won’t make it to Havenridge.”
I laugh. “Wasn’t last night and this morning enough for you?”
