It felt like devotion.

“I don’t know what’s real anymore,” I whispered. “I don’t know if Kaisen was using me. I don’t know if Amai is controlling me. I don’t know if this baby is part of some plan or if it’s just—just a mistake that everyone’s trying to capitalize on.”

Raven reached over and squeezed my hand again. “Then we’re gonna figure it out. Together. You hear me?”

I nodded, blinking back tears. “Yeah. I hear you.”

“But Truth, I need you to be real with me right now. Do you have feelings for Kaisen?”

The question hung in the air between us.

Did I?

I’d been drawn to him. I’d felt safe with him. I’d kissed him in Raven’s salon and felt something shift inside me—something warm and real.

But was that love? Or was it just relief?

Relief that someone was paying attention to me. Relief that someone was consistent and present and didn’t make me feel like I was drowning.

“I don’t know,” I said finally. “I thought I did. When he was around, I felt—I felt like I could breathe. Like I wasn’t alone. But now I don’t know if that was real or if he was just good at making me feel that way.”

“And Amai?”

I looked out the window, watching the trees blur past. We were getting closer to the city now. I could see the outlines of buildings in the distance, the glow of the sun making NOLA shine in a way that only it could.

“Amai is—” I stopped, searching for the right words. “He’s everything. When I’m with him, I feel like I’m on fire. Like I’m alive in a way I’ve never been before. But it’s also terrifying. Because I don’t know if I can trust him. I don’t know if he’stelling me the truth or if he’s just—just saying what I need to hear.”

Raven sighed. “So, you’re caught between two men who might both be lying to you.”

“Yeah. Pretty much.”

“And you’re carrying a baby that might belong to either one of them.”

“Yeah.”

“And you have no idea who to trust or what to do next.”

“Yeah.”

Raven was quiet for a long moment. Then she said, “Okay. Here’s what we’re gonna do. You’re gonna stay at Mama’s for a few days. You’re gonna get some space from both of them. And you’re gonna figure out whatyouwant. Not what Amai wants. Not what Kaisen wants. Not what Mama wants. Just you.”

Her words settled over me like a blanket.

Do what’s best for me.

When was the last time I’d done that?

When was the last time I’d made a decision based on whatIwanted instead of what everyone else needed from me?

I couldn’t remember.

But maybe it was time to start.

“And you’re not going back to that cabin until we know what’s really going on,” Raven continued. “And you’re not making any decisions about this baby or Amai or Kaisen or any of it until you have all the facts.”

“I know.”

“Good.” Raven’s voice was firm now, protective. “Because I’m not letting anybody—not Amai, not Kaisen, not anybody—mess with my sister. You understand?”
