Mace glanced down at his phone then looked back up at me. “Building management is checking who had access to the system. I’m waiting on a list of employees too.”

“Get everything.”

“I got you.”

Milan looked at him. “You don’t have to investigate this. The police are already doing that.” Mace and I both looked at her when she said that. “What?”

“Nothing,” I said.

She frowned. “Why did both of you look at me like that?”

“Because you think I’m waiting on the police.”

Her expression told me exactly what she thought about that. Then she mumbled, “Of course you aren’t.”

“Now you learning.”

“I don’t know if that’s a good thing.”

“It is tonight.” With that, we walked outside.

Milan stopped when she saw that we were heading to my truck near the entrance.

“My car is in the garage.”

“Leave it.”

“I need my car.”

“Not tonight.”

She turned toward me slowly. “Vice... I’m not leaving my car here. How you know I don’t have to work tomorrow.”

I looked toward the parking garage before bringing my attention back to her. “Somebody got into your building, shut down cameras and walked into your apartment without anybodynoticing. You think I’m letting you walk into that garage by yourself?”

“You could walk with me.”

“Yeah, I could...” She waited, expecting me to say something else, but I didn’t.

Her eyes then narrowed. “Fine. I’ll get it tomorrow…. You are really getting on my damn nerves, and don’t think I agreed because you told me to, either.”

“Don’t care why you agreed.”

She sucked her teeth and walked toward my truck.

For the first time since she’d called me, I felt some of the tension leave my body. She was still scared, and I knew that. She just hid it behind an attitude, and I could work with that. What I couldn’t work with was her staying somewhere these mothafuckas already knew how to find her.

Tonight, a hotel would have to do, but tomorrow, we were figuring out something better.

The drive to the hotel was quiet for the first few minutes. Milan sat in the passenger seat with her bag at her feet, staring out the window while I drove. She’d been running her mouth since I got to her apartment, so the silence caught my attention.

I glanced over at her. “You good?”

She kept her eyes on the window. “You already asked me that, and just like I told you before, I’m not.”

I nodded and kept driving. “My bad...”

She finally looked over at me, almost like she hadn’t expected me to leave it there. I didn’t know what else she wanted me to say. I couldn’t promise her everything was going to be okay when I didn’t know who the fuck we were dealing with. I couldn’t tell her she was safe when somebody had just proved otherwise.
