The smug look on his face got under my skin. Then Simone suddenly popped into my head.

“So let me ask you something.” Vice sighed, like he knew what I was about to ask, but I didn’t give a damn and asked my question anyway. “Simone can walk up and kiss you on the cheek in the middle of lunch, but Evan can’t send me flowers?”

He frowned.

“What Simone got to do with them flowers?”

I sucked my teeth and rolled my eyes. “Nothing… Just forget it.” I started to walk off but his next few words stopped me.

He said, “Sound like something to me.”

I hated how fast he flipped it on me.

“All I’m saying is… you didn’t throw Simone away.”

For a second, he just looked at me. Then he laughed. Not one of those little smirks he always gave me, but an actual laugh. It caught me so off guard that I almost smiled too, but I didn’t.

“You think that’s funny?”

“Yeah, I really do. As a matter of fact, it’s funny as hell, but cute too.” His grin lingered as he tilted his head to the side. “You jealous?”

“No.” The look on his face had me rolling my eyes up in my head, because it showed how much he didn’t believe me. “Anyway… were you?”

“Was I what?”

“Jealous.”

He held my gaze for a second before nodding toward the trash can. “Well, the flowers gone now.”

I rolled my eyes.

“Oh… now you don’t know how to answer questions.”

He started toward the exit, still not bothering to answer me. “You coming?”

“You’re annoying.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because you keep proving it.”

By the time we stepped outside, I wasn’t even mad about the flowers anymore. If anything, I was amused that Evan sending me flowers had bothered Vice enough to throw them away himself.

I wasn’t sure what that said about him. Hell, I was even less sure what it said about me that I liked it.

“Where you parked?”

I pointed toward the employee lot.

“Over there…”

“Come on… I’ll drive you over there and you can follow me.”

“Where we going?” I asked, getting in his truck.

“To eat…”

“Well… can I at least stop by my apartment and change? I don’t want to go out looking like this.”
