“How about telling her that I pestered you until you agreed to date me? Tell her we met in Billings. She doesn’t have to know about the rest.”

I snorted. “I met a billionaire in Billings, who fell at my feet and begged me to date him?”

“That works for me,” he said agreeably.

“My mother loves me, but I don’t know if she’ll buy it. You’re Asher Remington. I’m a woman who can barely feed her cat.”

“She’ll believe it,” he said confidently. “I’m not going to find it difficult to play the adoring boyfriend.”

My heart skittered.

Asher wouldn’t be my guy.

Not really.

But the thought of having a relationship with Asher didn’t exactly scare the hell out of me, which surprised me.

“I hope you’re a good actor,” I teased. “Are you really okay with traveling?”

“I had to do it all the time,” he shared. “It wasn’t easy, but I managed because it was my job. I think I’ll be more comfortable with it now than I was back then. I guess the only way I’ll know is to do it. It’s easier when you’re with me.”

“I’ll go,” I offered immediately, eager to help Asher however I could.

“Good,” he said in a satisfied voice. “We’ll spend another day in Austin before we go to the Houston area. Have you been there?”

“Never,” I admitted. “I didn’t travel much, not even around Texas. I barely got out of the Houston area most of the time.”

“Then I’ll show you Austin,” he offered.

“I’d like that,” I said softly, knowing that there were things that Asher really needed to know before he met my mother.

“I think I actually need a real shower right now,” Asher told me. “I think I stink.”

I surprised myself when I giggled for the first time in my life. “I can’t smell you because all I can smell is myself. You go first.”

Asher shifted me off his body, stood up, and scooped me up in his arms.

“Do you really think I’m going to give up the opportunity to touch your gorgeous body?” he asked.

“Can you do a thorough shower in the dark?” I asked with a delighted laugh.

He reached down and switched on the bedside lamp. “You’ll have to trust that I’m not looking,” he said earnestly as he lookedinto my eyes. “Maybe we can leave the door open just enough to see what we’re doing.”

I sighed as I rested my head on his shoulder.

Yep. Maybe we could do just that.

“Ican’t believe that you’re going to one of Millie’s family dinners,” Cole said as we spoke on the phone a few days later. “You’re actually feeling up to that?”

I hadn’t really spoken to Cole since he’d left for his honeymoon, and I was glad to get a chance to talk.

The two of us had always been close. We’d never gone long without communicating, even if it was simply by text.

Lauren was busy looking at tours for their next destination, so Cole had some idle time.

“I think all of that damn therapy is finally kicking in, and I’m getting out more with Sierra,” I told him. “It helps.”
