She wanted to get up and go to him, to wrap her arms around him.But she stayed where she was.“Why did you tell me?”

“I guess because we’re finally talking about it.”He smiled then, a wicked twinkle in his eye.“And I wasn’t terrified for long.”

She laughed softly.“You never were.”

“Yeah, I was,” he corrected.“I’m just better at hiding it than you are.”

The wicked twinkle had faded, replaced by a quiet, burning intensity, and she was suddenly nervous. With her heart thumping, she pushed to her feet.

“Um, I’m going to go up and call Chloe, tell her you’ll talk to the guys.”

“You can pass on my number, so they can contact me directly.”

“Okay.I’ll see you later.”

She was almost out of the room when he said, “I was thinking of going out for dinner. You’re welcome to join me.”

She forced herself to turn, to smile.“No, thanks.Today was a long day, and we’re fully booked tomorrow.I think I’m going to scrounge leftovers and turn in early.”

He nodded, his eyes hooded and dark.“Then I’ll see you later.”

She nodded, then walked out and started up the stairs, trying not to think about the ache in her chest.

Chapter Thirteen

Nash woke up on Saturday morning to the beep of his phone. He considered ignoring it, just pulling the pillow over his head and going back to sleep, but a glance at the clock told him it was already after ten.So after a joint-popping stretch, he picked it up.

Blinking to focus his eyes, he saw the first text was from Chloe.

I’m working today, and Jesse and Knox are hanging out in my apartment upstairs.

Wondering just what the hell he was supposed to do with that information, he swiped to the next message.

This one was from Jesse, and he’d added Knox to create a group chat.

Chloe says we’re supposed to talk to you about the thing.I don’t want to.

“Can’t blame you, brother,” Nash murmured.

The next text was from Knox.

Chloe wants us to talk to him, so we’re talking to him.Shut up.Nash, let us know when you’re available. We’re hanging out at Chloe’s place above the pub today.

That’s what he was supposed to do with that information.Amused, he typed out a message.

I’m available today, but I just got up.I can be there in about an hour.

He set the phone down and, only stumbling a little, trudged down the hall to the bathroom.

When he got back fifteen minutes later, freshly showered, there was a new message waiting.

Sounds good.See you then.

He was starting to type out a reply when a new message rolled in, this one from Sawyer.

My pals and I are available to talk today. Two o’clock?

It was followed immediately by an address.
