Luciano bit back a growl.Take pictures? Track the car? I don’t fucking think so.

“Okay,” Chenkus said. “I was hoping you could scare him, you know, threaten him. I mean, you are the Fixer.”

“I can’t ask someone on my team to approach a stranger in a dark parking garage at midnight,” Sin explained.

“I thought you’d do it yourself,” Chenkus pushed back. “Everyone knows who you are. I thought, maybe, you could rough him up a bit.”

“I have no idea who you’re dealing with, Mr. Chenkus. Let’s find out who he is, first.” Sin stood.

Meeting over.

He shook Sin’s hand. “Thanks for your time.”

Sin walked him out. Seconds later, he returned and shut the door. “We need this mule.”

“We sure as hell do,” Luciano replied. “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”

“We set up a team and grab him tonight,” Sin said.

Luciano smiled. “È perfetto. That’s perfect.”

THE TRUTH

SIMONE

“Kidnap him?” Simone blurted. “Are you twocrazy?”

Luciano and Sin exchanged glances. “Yes,” Luciano replied.

“We are,” Sin said.

“We need to bring him in for questioning,” Simone said. “Questioning, not kidnapping.”

“He won’t talk,” Luciano replied.

“You don’t have enough to hold him,” Sin added.

“If we witness the exchange of money for illegal passports, I will.” Simone’s attention shifted from the men to the conference table. “Chenkus forgot the surveillance glasses.”

Sin slipped them into his pocket. “Maybe we can catch him in the parking lot.”

They made their way through the office toward reception. Down the elevator they rode and into Sin’s private parking lot. A tall white privacy fence provided a natural deterrent to freeloaders who wanted to park there. That, along with the towing signs, helped keep the public out.

The brisk, sunny day had been replaced by a cold, dark evening. Simone buttoned her suit jacket. As she scanned for Chenkus, a car drove to the exit. “Is that him?”

Someone wearing a hoodie walked up to the driver’s side of the vehicle, pulled a gun, and opened fire.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

The shooter bolted.

Luciano pulled a gun from inside his suit jacket.

Simone grabbed her Glock. “Shots fired!”

“I’m calling for an ambulance,” Sin said.
