“His title?” Z asked.

“Deputy Director Special Projects,” Sin said.

“I just invited the Director and his wife to join my wife and me on our yacht for a Sunday cruise,” Luther said.

“What for?” Z asked.

“To grease the wheels when he rejects our replacements,” Luther replied. “I think Sinclair is going to be a harder sell than Carrera. At least Carrera is a career agent. Sin has never worked in law enforcement.”

The conversation continued for several more minutes. Carrera spoke only when directly asked a question. Otherwise, he stayed silent, his vibrating phone in his pants pocket a reminder that he had a shit ton of things to do.

After a pregnant pause, Z said, “Alright, you’ve got my blessing.” He shifted his attention from Sin to Carrera. “Welcome to the dark side.”

Relief mixed with excitement washed over him.

In a matter of minutes, his career had drastically shifted from a cog in a well-oiled wheel to a position of tremendous power.

“Our organization is in good hands,” Luther said. “We can walk away knowing that the next generation will carry on with our intended mission.”

“Carrera, stop by whenever you’re in the building,” Z said. “I’ll show you everything I’m privy to, then we’ll start transitioning the decisions to you.”

“Will do,” Carrera replied.

“We’ll tell the Director our decision, then I’m taking you to Rudy’s for lunch,” Luther said to Z.

After handshakes all around, the men exited the conference room.

Luther spoke with the Director’s assistant, then they waited. Ten minutes later, the Director exited his office.

“Director, this is Carrera Santini,” Luther said.

“Good to meet you, sir,” Carrera said shaking his hand.

“Let’s talk in my office,” the Director said.

Everyone got comfortable around the conference room table, with the Director sitting at the head.

To Carrera’s surprise, Sin sat at the other end, leaving the chair next to Carrera empty. That ballsy move got Sin a disgruntled look from the Director.

“As you know, I’m retiring,” Z said. “These are our replacements.”

The Director slid his gaze from Carrera to Sin. “Carrera, you’re a Special Agent, yes?”

“Yes, sir, for the past nine years, which includes undercover work.”

“Sinclair, I have a hard time condoning you in this position because you don’t have any law enforcement or legal background, but I would be a fool to refuse The Fixer. I’m confident a time will come when I’ll need your team to save my ass.”

Sin nodded, once.

“Congratulations, gentlemen,” said the Director. “Carrera, are you taking Philip’s office in the basement?”

“Undecided, sir,” Carrera replied.

“He can take my old office,” Luther said.

“Someone’s working in there,” the Director said.

“I’ll move in next week,” Carrera said.
