Slash shook her head. This woman was beyond messed up.

“Is your boyfriend, Greg, the owner?” Slash asked. “I saw him in the kink room with Deb right before she went missing. If he’s involved with these missing women, are you an accomplice?”

Karen harrumphed. “For the hundredth time, those women didn’t go missing. They quit! Why are you so obsessed with this anyway? Who gives a fuck!”

Fury pounded through her.

“You’re behind bars and you won’t even save your own sorry ass. I won’t stop until I find him.” She regarded Karen with cool disdain. “You didn’t win, and neither will he.”

Slash pushed out of the chair and left.

As she headed into the parking lot, she bit back a smile.

The bait had been set. All she had to do was wait for Greg to take it.

Instead of going back to Carrera’s, she drove to BLACK OPS, stopping to grab dinner on the way. After parking in the hangar, she shouldered her computer satchel, grabbed the food, and made her way to the retina scanner. The light turned green, and inside she went.

To her surprise, she heard voices coming from one of the offices. Following the sound, she walked down the corridor, glancing into empty rooms until she stopped in front of an open doorway.

Carrera was on speaker phone. He flashed her a smile as she walked in.

“I appreciate your help, Malcolm,” Carrera said, as Slash set her items on the desk.

“Who should we contact, Deputy Director Santini?” asked the man on the phone.

“Special Agent O’Reilly and me.” After providing their contact info, Carrera hung up.

“Hey, babe.” He pushed out of the chair and kissed her hello. “That was the detention center. We’ll be notified if Karen has visitors.”

“You’re handy to have around, Deputy Director,” she said.

He leaned his ass against the table, kept his hands anchored on her waist. “How’d it go?”

“Like we expected. Karen wouldn’t give up the owner, wouldn’t comment on Greg, and she doesn’t give a damn about the missing women.”

“You’re not surprised, are you?”

“No, but Iamsurprised she doesn’t want to save her own ass. I can’t figure out why she’s so loyal to Greg. It’s not like he’s her husband.”

“Maybe he is. We don’t know anything about him.”

“With any luck, she’ll give him a heads up. I reminded her that I caught her, and I told her he’s next.”

Concern flashed in his eyes. It was subtle, but she caught it. “You don’t think I can take him, do you?”

“I do, babe,” he said, “but if he kidnapped seven women and left no trace, you can’t underestimate him.”

“I’m not afraid.”

He shot her a smile. “Eyes wide open.”

“Always,” she replied. “Ready to work?”

“Let’s do this.”

After opening her laptop, she said, “I’ve been waiting fifteen long years to take out this monster.”

While they ate, they talked strategy. Kill missions had to be exact, they had to be quick, and they could leave no trail.
