“I am,” Owen said.

“Me too,” Layla agreed.

Jericho handed each of them a cup before Slash climbed into the back with them, and they took off.

Jericho talked to the kids most of the way to his house. He smiled more than Carrera had ever seen, and he’d softened his voice.

For a large, foreboding man, he looked like a teddy bear. Relief swept through Carrera.

“If things work out,” Jericho said, “Liv and I might adopt them.”

“Whoa,” Slash said from the back seat.

“We’ll see,” Jericho continued. “We stayed up late talking about it. We have to find out their situation. They might have good family waitin’ to take care of them. I’ll keep you posted. For now, they’re safe and they’ll be loved.”

Slash

Later that afternoon,Slash entered the Arlington detention center, flashed her FBI badge. After signing in, she was escorted to the detainee visiting room. From the moment Slash had learned Karen had tried to kill Elsa, she couldn’t shake the anger.

Karen would pay for what she’d done. Slash would make sure of that.

Slash didn’t give a damn about the prostitution ring, and would have moved in for the arrest sooner had she not found out about the missing women. But the attempted murder was personal. Who the fuck tries to burn down an old woman’s house?

A growl shot out of her.

A goddamn sociopath, that’s who.

A guard led Karen in. She glared at Slash before sitting down on the other side of the glass window.

“You must be pretty fucking proud of yourself,” Karen said.

“You got an issue with me, come after me. Only monsters try to kill an innocent, old woman.”

Karen’s lips split into a menacing smile. Once again, Brit’s motto held true.

Life’s short, shit happens, people are mostly crazy.

“You don’t get it,” Karen said. “If I’d killed you, you wouldn’t have suffered. This was all about revenge, bitch. You made me suffer. I wanted to repay the favor.”

Slash glared at her. “No,youdon’t get it. You did this to yourself when you impeded an active-threat investigation.”

“Oh, you mean at ALPHA!” Karen bellowed.

Those guards don’t give a fuck about her blathering.

“It’s time to save your sorry ass,” Slash said. “I’m here to throw you one lifeline. Tell me the club owner’s name and where I can find him.”

Karen’s shrill cackle pierced her ears.

“The last thing I would do is help you.”

“Seven women went missing from your club. You were there busting your ass every single day and every single night. What did you get out of that? Not enough or you wouldn’t have pocketed the prostitution money.”

“I did not?—”

“We’re way beyond your lies at this point,” Slash said. “You got ten grand from Claude Amos and you kept it. You’re facing a lot of prison time. Save your own ass, or are you too stupid to do that?”

“Fuck you, you bitch,” Karen spat out. “Fuck you a million times.”
