When she glanced up at the house, Elsa stood in the doorway, waving. Slash rolled down the passenger window. “Love you.”
“Love you, honey. Drive safely. Thanks for making my birthday so special.”
A single tear rolled down Slash’s cheek as she drove away. Slash couldn’t remember the last time she’d cried.
I would be lost without her.
Carrera
Carrera hada mouth full of food when G-ma marched back into the kitchen. “What is wrong with you?”
He shrugged, finished chewing, then swallowed. “I don’t want to talk about her.”
“Why don’t you just admit how you feel?”
“I have,” Carrera replied as he cleared his dish from the table. “I can’t stand her and you know it. I’m polite for your sake.”
She followed him to the sink and swatted his arm. “Amanda May is very, very good to me.”
He stayed silent. No point in discussing her. Yes, hehadfeelings for her. Once. A long time ago. Yes, his feelings were strong, but c’mon, she was his first. They had teen love, then he learned the truth about her, broke it off, moved away for college, and kept his distance ever since.
But damn… she looked fantastic. I mean, beyond gorgeous.
She’d probably find her way into a late-night fantasy, but for the moment, he’d pull his mind from the gutter and try to get his grandmother to stop talking about her.
“You asked me to look after her, so I swing by her house every night,” Carrera said. “Isn’t that enough?”
G-ma grunted. “Even I could do that. How do you know she’s home?”
“Sometimes her lights are on.”
Shaking her head, she said, “Do better, Carrera.” After a beat, she added, “Do you want a piece of cake?”
He grinned. “And a cuppa coffee.”
She made him a single-serving cup while he cleaned up the dishes. Then, they sat at the table and he wolfed down a huge piece of cake.
“I’m going to be in a TV commercial,” G-ma said.
“How’d you manage that?” he asked before sipping the hot drink.
“Russell’s event.”
He checked his phone calendar. “That’s tomorrow night.”
“Will you be there?” Elsa asked.
“Wouldn’t miss it.”
“Good. I need a ride home.”
“How are you getting to his restaurant?” He sipped the coffee.
“Russell’s picking me up.” She smiled. “I’m getting my hair done tomorrow and I have a new outfit. It’s exciting. He said the media will be there.”
“Why?”
“He said he has a big announcement.”
