GET IT ON

Carrera

Carrera knew what he was getting himself into. He needed to earn back Slash’s trust, then slowly remind her that loving him had been her favorite thing to do.

And his.

He shouldneverhave stopped loving her. But he was getting way ahead of himself. The word love shouldn’t even be on his mind. They had a mountain to climb before they could see the valley below.

They finished the run in silence. As she returned to her street, she touched his arm. “I’m gonna slow down, then walk it off.”

He followed her lead until they got to her house.

“Do you want some water?” she asked.

“Sure.”

He’d never been invited into her home. Ever. This was a win.

They entered her townhouse through the garage. Up the stairs she went. He triednotlooking at her ass, but he couldn’t help it. Only this time, her shapely legs caught his eye. Definedmuscles under soft skin. He’d always loved her legs, especially wrapped around him.

In the kitchen, she set her switchblade on the counter, removed her phone and armband, before filling two tall glasses with water.

“Where was the blade?” he asked.

“In my hand.”

“Why don’t you strap it?—”

“No good if I’m attacked.”

“Have you ever been?—”

“Not on a run, but I’m ready if someone jumps me or tries to pull me into a car.”

“Badass,” he said.

“Just trying to stay alive in a fucked-up world.”

She had a point.

“I spoke to the mother of the two sisters who went missing from Blue Suit,” she said after draining her glass.

“How’d that go?”

“She let me look through one of the sisters’ journals.”

She told Carrera about Kim’s final entries about a guy named Greg.

“Great work. Seriously, that’s impressive.” He stepped close, peered down at her. “Why don’t I wait while you shower, then I’ll drive you over?”

He loved that she didn’t back away. She stared into his eyes for several seconds while the air grew charged with desire. He wanted to pull her into his arms, kiss her, love her for hours.

Arealapology.

“I’ll drive myself.”
