“No,” Jilly protested, “you keep it.”
Slash held out the money. “Take it.”
“Wow, thanks,” Jilly said.
As Slash changed into her street clothes, Karen moseyed into view.
“Here comes the boss,” Deb murmured.
“Didn’t she do great?” Jilly said as Karen joined them.
“Whatever,” Karen replied.
“C’mon, boss.” Deb held up the wad of cash. “She cleaned up. This is great for biz.”
Jilly held up the other half. “She killed it.”
“Yeah, so I don’t think you’re a good fit,” Karen said.
Slash needed to keep chill. If Karen wouldn’t hire her, the Bureau would have to send in another Special Agent. “No prob. Thanks for the?—”
Karen’s phone started ringing and Deb startled. “Damn, that’s loud.”
After glancing at the screen, Karen’s face split with a smile. “It’s my boyfriend.” She answered, put the phone to her ear. “Hey, you.” As she listened, her smile fell away. “Well, I don’t think—” Her eyes narrowed. “I disagree.” Then, she sighed. “Of course, you’re right. I can’t wait to see you too. Byeeeeeee.” Karen hung up and sighed. “He’s the best.”
“C’mon, KW, you gotta give Slash the job,” Jilly said.
“You’re lucky my sweetie puts me in the best mood,” Karen said. “The gig is yours, but you can’t ghost on me. In the past few months, I’ve lost six girls.”
Out of the corner of her eye, Slash saw Jilly shaking her head.
“Dancers work on tips only,” Karen continued. “You can access the schedule through the dancers-only portal on the club website. You start next week.”
“That’ll work,” Slash said.
Without so much as a smile, Karen marched out.
“We don’t like her,” Jilly whispered.
“She’s a total B,” Deb added. “We make good money, so we put up with her.”
Biting back a smile, Slash added, “I knew someone like her at my last job. There’s one in every group.”
“If you two wanna catch up, I’ll take your next shift, but you’ll have to close,” Deb said to Jilly.
“No problem,” Jilly said. “We’ll sit at a table up by the bar.”
Slash stepped into her biker boots.
As she and Jilly left the dressing area, Slash spotted a surveillance camera in the corner, and a chill swept through her.
What’s with the camera in the dressing room?
While walking through the club, Slash refused to scan for Carrera. Perv-man, lurking in the shadows was not her problem.
A customer approached and held out a twenty.
“I really enjoyed your performance,” he said.
