“I took his office.”
“So?”
“He’s got a grudge against Luciano,” Carrera replied.
“What does that have to do with you?”
“No idea.”
“Hmm,” Slash said. “A few years ago, Hirzog’s wife left him.”
“How do you know?”
“Luciano told me.” After a beat, she said, “We’re raiding Blue Suit on Friday night.”
“This Friday?”
“Yeah. I’m gonna miss Danielle and Cooper’s dress rehearsal.”
“Do you have a date for the wedding?” he asked.
“You,” she replied matter-of-factly.
At the red light, he leaned over. She smiled as their lips came together.
“I can get through all this BS at work, as long as I have you by my side,” he said.
She laid her hand on his thigh, sending a jolt of energy pounding through him.
Fifteen minutes later, he parked near the Arlington County Courthouse. Once inside, he texted his sister.
“They’re on the third floor,” Carrera said to Slash.
Upstairs, they knocked on the judge’s chambers. A middle-aged Black man opened the door. “Come on in, I’m Judge Gadson.”
They introduced themselves, shook the Judge’s hand. Russell and Jazz stood nearby.
Jazz was smiling, Russell was not.
Wedding jitters?
Carrera hugged his sister, shook Russell’s clammy hand. Slash said hello.
“Is everyone ready?” asked Judge Gadson.
Russell handed Carrera two gold wedding bands. Simple and lightweight, they felt more like aluminum than actual gold.
As the judge began, Carrera clasped Slash’s hand.
“Do you have vows you’d like to say to each other?” asked the judge.
“Yes,” they both replied.
“Jasmine, why don’t you say yours first?” suggested the judge.
“Russell, I love you. I love that we work together, love that your dream has become mine. I will support you and take care of you, listen to you, and be there for you. We have our whole lives to get to know each other and I’m excited to spend mine with you.”
Carrera handed her the ring and she slid it into Russell’s finger.
