Karen steeled her spine. “What women?”

“Seven dancers have gone missing in the past five months,” Alexandra replied. “Are you the owner?”

“I run the club.”

“The public needs to know there’s a predator out there.”

Though Karen looked genuinely surprised, Carrera wasn’t assuming her innocence.

Karen’s attention jumped to him, then she checked out his tats. Slash had dressed him, and she’d been right.

Her cheeks flushed and she beamed. “Mr. Amos, hi.” Then, she glanced at Alexandra and her smile fell away. “Are you two together?”

“I’m here alone,” Carrera said. “Ms. Wilde interviewed me a few months ago and we just ran into each other.”

“I did an extensive piece on Mr. Amos for Uber-Wealth magazine,” Alexandra said. “His picture be on the magazine cover.”

Karen flicked her gaze to him. “What do you do?”

“Read the article,” he replied.

Alexandra leaned toward Karen. “Just between us… he’s being modest. Mr. Amos is filthy rich and very available. He’s got three homes, one in the Riviera, one in…”

“Palm Beach,” Carrera added. “And a third in Malibu.”

“Oh, wow,” Karen whispered.

“Karen, you want these missing women found, don’t you?” Carrera pushed.

“They’re notmissing,” Karen said. “They ghosted on me.”

“Then you should talk about that,” Carrera urged. “If you don’t, the club will get a bad rep.”

Karen nibbled her finger. “I’m not sure about this.”

“I can come back and speak with the owner,” Alexandra said.

“No, that won’t work,” Karen replied.

“Why not?” Alexandra asked.

“I’ll stay with you, make sure things go smoothly.” Carrera flashed Karen an encouraging smile.

She held his gaze for an extra beat.

C’mon, take the damn bait, for fuck’s sake.

“We can talk in my office,” Karen said.

As Carrera pushed off the stool, he caught Alexandra’s eye.

As they made their way through the club, Karen asked, “Where’s your free-use girl?”

“I’m not sure that’s working out,” he said.

“Why’s that?”

“I need variety,” he replied.
