After G-ma fell asleep, Carrera asked Slash who she thought could have done it.

“I have no idea,” Slash replied. “What about you?”

Carrera raked his hands down his beard. “It makes no sense.”

“What about someone trying to hurt a family member, but targeting an old woman?”

“I thought of that,” he said. “But who?”

“What about someone who wants to distract me from the case,” she said. “Or someone who resents your promotion at work?”

“It’s messed up, but maybe. What about family?”

“Everyone loves G-ma,” Slash said.

“What about money as motive?”

“They’d have to be listed as a beneficiary in her will. I’ve never seen her will. Have you?”

“No, but Luciano’s her executor.” Carrera pulled out his phone. “I’ll ask him.” Carrera fired off a text to his cousin.

Fire was set. Who are G-ma’s beneficiaries?

When no dots appeared, he checked the time. It was three in the morning.

“Tomorrow, I’ll buy her some new clothes,” Slash said. “And whatever else she needs.”

“Grab what you need from your house,” he said.

“Are you sure about this?”

He slid his hand behind her neck, leaned over, and kissed her. “Absolutely. I can hire a nurse if she needs help, so you don’t end up taking care of her.”

“I would do that for her,” Slash said.

They slept on and off ‘til seven. Carrera went to the cafeteria for breakfast, returning with a tray of food.

G-ma was awake and alert.

He set the tray on a table. “I got eggs, sausage, toast, and three mini boxes of cereal.”

“The nurse checked on Elsa and her breakfast is on its way,” Slash said.

Elsa pulled her oxygen mask off. “Don’t you need to get to work?”

“Work?” Slash said. “Hell, no.”

“We’re not leaving you,” Carrera said.

That made Elsa smile.

After breakfast, the doctor stopped by. She listened to G-ma’s lungs, checked her oxygen levels. “You’re improving nicely,” she said. “I’m going to put in another request for a chest X-ray. How are you feeling?”

“A little better.”

When the doctor left, Slash asked, “Elsa, where do you buy your clothing?”

“That boutique near my house, but I’ve gotten a few things online from the website you sent me.”
