“Whatever you need,” she replied. “As much as I’m concerned about these missing women, everything takes a back seat to Elsa. Everything.”

“I’m sorry about Teddy,” he said.

“No surprise.”

“You risked your life for her,” he said.

“You were right there with me.”

They talked a little longer, then dozed for a few hours.

Carrera’s dreams were dark, like the smoke-filled house. He was chasing someone, someone he could never get close to. But he was filled with unmistakable hatred for whoever he was after. He jerked awake to find Slash studying his face.

“You talk in your sleep,” she whispered.

“I was chasing a bad guy,” he said.

“Catch him?”

“No,” he replied. “Did you sleep?”

“A little. I’m pretty keyed up. Providence is gunning for an arrest, I want to talk to this Greg guy, I feel so much pressure to find the missing women.” She glanced over at Elsa. “We’ve got to tell her a little about these cases.”

“Why?”

“If she’s living with you, but you’re locking her out of your home office, she’ll wonder what you’re hiding from her.”

“I’ll tell her it’s my kink room.”

“And I go in there with you because it’s our torture chamber.”

They shared a laugh.

Elsa woke up and smiled. “Seeing you like this makes me very happy.”

“I was wrong about Amanda May,” Carrera said. “I want to apologize to both of you. Slash, I shouldneverhave treated you badly and I’m deeply sorry for hurting you. G-ma, you were right. Slash is an amazing woman and I get why she’s your number one.”

G-ma smiled. “Thank you for saying that.”

Slash’s smile meant everything to him. Absolutely everything.

One step at a time.

“How did I get out of the house?” G-ma asked.

“Slash ran in and pulled you out.”

“Oh, my goodness. That was so brave of you. And so dangerous. You’re not supposed to run into a burning building, honey.”

“I did what I had to do,” Slash replied.

Elsa squeezed her hand. “Thank you.”

“Carrera ran in too,” Slash said. “He got us both out.” She kissed G-ma’s forehead. “How are you feeling?”

“Tired. My chest hurts a little. Did you say the fire was intentionally set?”

“Yeah,” Carrera replied. “We’ll talk more later. For now, rest.”
