This is it.

The truth was impossible to ignore. They were falling in love all over again. Joy, mixed with trepidation, had her tugging away her hand.

“I got you,” he murmured.

“Thank you for saying that.”

“I saw you talking to a dancer at the bar,” he said.

She appreciated that he changed the subject, putting her on more solid footing.

“I spoke with two of them,” she said. “They’d both been propositioned by customers, but not together. One remembered his wild hair, the other didn’t remember what he looked like, but they both remembered the tip. Five-hundred bucks each.”

“When?”

“One happened months ago, one recently. After he tipped them, he asked about private time in a VIP room. One refused, but the other said yes. When she went into the room with him, she said she didn’t like the set up and left.”

“Did they get his name?”

“They didn’t remember.”

“We gotta find this Greg guy.”

She lifted her phone from her bag. “I’m checking on Elsa.”

“Now?”

“It’s only eleven-twenty. She doesn’t go to sleep until after the news.”

Slash put the call on speaker. It rang and rang, then rolled to voicemail. “Hmm.”

“Baby, she’s sleeping.”

“She was coughing pretty good. Maybe she’s sick.”

“People cough.”

“Drop me off,” she said. “I’ll swing by.”

“We’ll go together, but if she gets mad because you woke her?—”

“I’ll blame you,” she said with a smile.

Carrera drove toward Elsa’s Alexandria home. After turning onto her street, Slash smelled smoke.

What the hell…

Elsa’s house was backlit in a bright orange, flames shooting into the night sky.

Carrera hit the gas as Slash blurted, “Her house is on fire!”
