“I spoke with the mom. She didn’t mention that.”

“She didn’t know. We read Kim’s journal together and found the entries. POI calls himself Greg. No physical description, but he comes across as shy and awkward. I think he’s kidnapping these women, but I have nothing to go on.”

Rosario finished her sandwich. “No fingerprints, no foul play. No one saw anything. I wonder if this Greg guy actually takes them out or he’s just kidnapping them and killing them.”

“Same. The pressure to solve these?—”

“My insomnia is through the roof,” Rosario said. “With this many women going missing, do you think we should let the dancers there know?”

“I’m undercover at the club, so I can’t say anything too obvious,” Slash said.

“Gotcha,” Rosario replied.

“I gonna ask around about Greg but I need to keep things chill. If he finds out, he might bolt.”

Rosario nodded. “Are you working the case alone?”

Carrera’s handsome face popped into her thoughts.

“Who is he?” Rosario asked.

“Who?”

“The reason you’re smiling,” the detective replied.

“My partner’s got my back,” Slash said.

Rosario drained her iced tea. “Makes a big difference.”

Having Carrera in her corner madeallthe difference. For the first time in fifteen years, he brought a smile to her face.

And she liked that… she liked that a lot.

Carrera

Carrera tookthe stairs to the basement in the FBI building. As he rounded the corner, a mouse scurried away.

Why in the hell would anyone work down here?

He stopped in front of Z’s office. Though the door was shut, he could hear him on the phone. “That’ll get assigned to a Special Agent.” Silence. “I disagree. Why would ALPHA take that case? How do you know about that? You can’trevealyour source? Are you shitting me, Sinclair? When have we ever kept secrets?”

Knock-knock.

“Carrera’s here,” Z said. “I’ll let him decide.” After a second, Z said, “Come in.”

Carrera opened the door. “Now a good time?”

Z had ended his call with Sin.

“I’m gonna throw you in the deep end, starting with a very unusual case.” Z typed in a few keystrokes and all four monitors on his wall came to life. Each had different information on them.

Carrera eased onto the worn office chair.

“These are all the cases assigned to Special Agents,” Z began. “They’re by state, county, office.” Z scrolled and scrolled and scrolled, then jumped the cursor to the next screen. “These are ALPHA’s cases. The next screen are BLACK OPS missions. Cold cases for the Bureau are on this last screen. If you need to look up any case—active, closed, or cold—you can.” He showed Carrera how to search.

“Got it,” Carrera replied.

“Most cases are handled by the Bureau,” Z said. “I move some to ALPHA before they’re assigned, but occasionally I reassign after the fact. It’s risky since the case just disappears.”
