A devilish smile spread across his face. “C’mon, you can do it.”

The temptation to touch him was impossible to ignore, so she placed her hand in his and stood. Together, they walked into the living room and sat on the sofa.

Sheshouldhave pulled her hand away, but she didn’t. She could tell herself it’s because she didn’t have the strength… but that was total BS. She liked it.

Ugh.

“Z is retiring,” he said while caressing her hand with his thumb.

Soft, delicate strokes that soothed her inner beast.

“Brit had mentioned he was thinking about it,” she replied.

She loved looking into his eyes.

“He’s out at the end of July, and I’m his replacement.”

“You are not.”

“Z and another man, Luther Warschak?—”

“Luther brought me into ALPHA,” Slash said. “I adore him, his wife too.”

“He and Z picked their replacement. Well, actually, Sin and Luciano chose me?—”

“Whoa. Back up.”

“Yeah, so I’m not supposed to tell you any of this.”

“Clearly,” she said.

“Luther was good with their decision. Z was not, but Luther and Sin changed his mind.”

“I can’t believe this. What does Luciano have to do with this?”

Carrera broke eye contact.

“Let’s leave him out of this,” she said.

“After spending yesterday morning at ALPHA and part of the afternoon at BLACK OPS, I spent the evening transferring the cases to you,” he explained. “You’re officially working them as FBI Agent O’Reilly.”

A sudden feeling of gratitude washed over her. Leaning close, she kissed him. “Thank you.”

He smiled. “I’m still your partner, so we’ll work them together.”

“You don’t have time?—”

“For you, I do.”

“This is crazy,” she murmured.

“But there’s a catch.”

She yanked her hand away. “Dammit, Carrera. Why do you always?—”

“I just want to know why these cases are so important to you,” he said.

Oh, boy.
