“Wow.”

“It was a small price to pay. Because of her, I got away from a predator who was sexually assaulting the foster kids.”

A growl shot out of him. “If there’s anything I fucking hate, it’s the monsters who prey on the innocent.”

“You and me both, honey.”

He cracked a smile. “I’m your honey. Love that, babe.”

“Yeah, uh-huh.” Even though she tugged her hand away, her gaze stayed anchored on his.

His brows slashed down. “Were you tailed?”

“Did you or didn’t you?”

“No,” he replied. “Were you followed?”

She didn’t want to lie, didn’t want to make a big deal out of it either. “Maybe.”

“Jesus, why didn’t you tell me?”

“I can take care of myself.”

“I’m not letting you out of my sight,” he said.

In a flash, she pulled the switchblade from her ankle sheath, wrapped one hand around his throat, and pressed the tip of the knife against the fabric, directly over his heart.

“I got this,” she said.

After a beat, she backed off, tucked the knife away.
