An apology is the least he can offer, even if it seems insignificant.

I cackle.

“I don’t know what?—”

I press the knife to his jugular before he continues with his lies.“Tell me it was you that night!Tell me what Rebecca did!”

He shakes his head.

With a scream, I punch him over and over, his nose and lip splitting under the force.Jupiter claps in the background, egging me on.

Jack slumps forward, his head sagging to his chest, blood dribbling from his chin.“Stop, please,” he whispers, blood mixed with tears.

“Oh my God.Are youcrying?Jupiter, are you seeing this?”

With one eye swollen closed, Jack looks around the room.“Who’s Jupiter?”

The walls begin closing in on me, and my reality splits into two.

What’s happening?

“No!”I scream, dropping the knife as I clutch at my pounding head.

A blackout is creeping in, threatening to drag me under this tidal wave, and I’m certain I’ll drown this time.

White noise blares, but I shove it aside.

I’m not leaving until I get what I came here for.

“Tell me!”I demand, picking up the knife and composing myself.

The buttons on his pajama top scatter all over the polished floor as I rip it open, pressing the blade over his chest.

“I will cut out your fucking heart!Admit what you did!”

“Fine!”he confesses, defeated.“Rebecca chose you.She wanted to teach you a lesson for what happened in the diner. She said you were white trash, that people like you were beneath us, and that you needed to be put in your place!

“We were only supposed to scare you.But when Arthur was on the phone with her, she changed her mind and told us to show you what happens when you think you’re better than us.”

Jupiter gasps behind me.Hearing the truth from the person who committed the crime is different from hearing it from a victim. It makes the villain so much worse.

The heavy weight pressing on my chest is gone, and I can finally breathe again.

“And the other girls?Confess what you did to them.”

Jack sobs, shuddering and howling like a baby.“Yes, I drugged and raped those sluts! They deserved it!So did you!People like you contaminate this town! You are nothing! Now, untie me.”

I tsk him, crouching low and getting into his face.“And this was going so well.”

I playfully smack his cheek before raising the knife, and just as I’m about to thrust it into his chest, the door bursts open.

Spinning around, I don’t quite understand what I’m seeing because two police officers are flanking a woman in civilian clothing, but she appears to also be police by the gun in her holster. And behind them are Kit and Dandy.

I look at Jupiter, who is just as lost as I am.

The woman walks toward me, hands raised in peace.“It’s okay, Hallie. You can drop the knife. You’re safe.”

I don’t understand.
