“There is,” said Dane briefly.“But it’s not our story to tell.”
“Bottom line, I think I can help her see things ...from my point of view,” said Lily, gently.
“I’d like to be present,” said Dane.
“So do we,” added the twins, stepping forward, but the Alpha refused.
“Next, everyone will want to be there, and the poor girl will feel even more afraid than she already is.No, we’ll let her rest.As soon as the doctor gives permission, we’ll see who’ll accompany Lily.”
If anywas on the tip of the tongue, but Connor suppressed it.Lily’s eyes were heavy with fatigue, and the Alpha invited them to spend the night there, where they had plenty of room.
Somehow, Connor managed to clear the room.Even the twins were invited to leave the office, despite being forbidden of going near the hospital.Evelyn’s eyes were somber, dark with sorrow and lack of sleep. But judging by her tense expression, she hadn’t yet accomplished everything she had set out to do.
Just don’t do anything stupid, Matháir ...not now.
Chapter Twenty-Eight
Her head hurt.Shehadn’t felt such headache since ...sincehim.What had happened?Where was she?
She tried to pry her eyes open, but it seemed like they were stuck with glue. The throb on top of her head was strong, almost as if her heart had taken an elevator to her head and camped out on top of her temple. She licked her lips, dry as the beach sand, and tried to open her eyes. She moaned in pain when light pierced her sensitive eyes and immediately closed them again.
“You’re awake,” chirped a voice to her left.Turning her head toward the sound, she tried to mentally locate herself. She’d been at home ...talking to ...to whom?Memories were fuzzy.
“I’ll call the doctor,” said the same cheery voice, and Freya felt her leave the room.
Her head ached terribly, but what hurt her most was the feeling that she was doing something wrong. No ...that therewassomething wrong.
“Hello, pretty lady.”The voice belonged to a man and was calm, serene, almost paternal.
Freya opened her eyes. The room’s light had greatly diminished, so her sensitive eyes didn’t hurt. The doctor conducted a quick exam, checking her pupils and trying to assess her level of pain. Then, he started asking some questions, how was she feeling, did she remember what had happened, did she know where she was, and Freya felt her anxiety increase. And then, it all came back to her.The howls outside her house...Ciaran and Declan’s eyes, changing...The animals chasing her, the gun in her hands and then ...oblivion...
“Where did you get that gun?”
“Are you one of them?”asked Freya in return. If he was surprised by her question, he didn’t mention it, merely nodded silently. Her eyes filled with tears and she closed them, a sense of hopelessness and despair filling her chest.
“I’ll never be free,” she sobbed.“He promised there were no wolves here, he promised I was safe.”
