“Why not, baby girl?”pressed Tanya.“It’ll be fun.Nanna lets us use the cabin for the weekend, as long as we don’t wreck it.”
A cabin. Not exactly tents separating them from God knew what was out there. Not that walls were exactly safe ...her house hadn’t protected her from Lewis.
But Lewis was dead, wasn’t he?They had all said it, and so were his cousins. She could start living again, breathing again.Maybe even trying to return to the old Freya, if she was still around...
Evelyn had done it ...after living in fear and isolation. She had gotten up, lifted her head, and started living again. She had remarried, had children, and grown old with a man she loved by her side.Their life was not comparable, no trauma could really be compared to another, but Evelyn was a survivor.A strong-willed woman. And she needed to do the same, be the same.
“Yes, I’ll go with you.When?”
“Great!”said Tanya with a satisfied smile.Freya didn’t look at the twins, but she had the strong feeling that they were both happy and she couldn’t understand why.
****
“Good job, knucklehead. She’s terrified!”reprimanded Tanya through the mind-link.
“Yeah, but not by us.”
“She’s still scared.”
“Of course she is.She was abducted during the night.”
“That’s not it.From what I was told, the abuse always occurred after the sunset. And she always sleeps with the lights on.She’s afraid of the dark.”
“Wouldn’t you be as well, if the dark brought pain and blood to you?”
“That’s not just it.The full moon will be upon us shortly. Can you control your wolves?”
“If they’re near their mate, they will be.”
“You’ll shift and scare her.Maybe Nanna is right and you should go to Uncle Connor’s house.”
“Only as a last resort.”
Tanya glanced quickly at Declan in the rearview mirror, but his gaze was unwavering.Clearly, the twins had already thought about this thoroughly. They feared the full moon as much as they desired it.For now, they only unleashed their wolves at night, when everyone was already fast asleep, but no matter how far they went, they always ended up looking at the back of Freya's house.Only sheer force kept them at bay.But that force would wane under the full moon’s gaze.It would be the only time they’d be under full control. And then who could keep them apart from her?
“If you lose her, you’ll regret it forever,”she said, and there was a warning in her voice that did not go unnoticed.Tanya had never found her mate, nor were the twins convinced that she didn’t play for the other team, but she was right and they knew that if they couldn’t pass Freya’s defenses during the weekend, they did need to go to their uncle’s and spend the night in confinement.
Forcing a cheerful disposition she was far from feeling, Tanya asked jovially, “So, what do you say we go shopping later?”
“Shopping?”
“Of course, baby girl ...we can’t go to the cabin without supplies.”With a mischievous grin, she added, “Marshmallows and hot dogs are a must when we go to the cabin.”
