“Yes.”
I look up at him.
He does not even have the decency to look concerned.
“I mean, a lot,” I clarify. “Like, an irresponsible amount. Like, an amount that makes me want to sit down and breathe into a paper bag.”
His mouth curves faintly.
“You don’t have to worry about that.”
“That is absolutely the kind of sentence only someone with too much money would say.”
“I happen to have too much money.”
I give him a look.
He does not appear sorry.
Not even slightly.
I look back at the boxes. “I can bring the blue one back.”
His expression changes to a stern one.
“No.”
“It’s still in the box and everything."
“No.”
“I tried it on, but I didn’t wear it-wear it.”
His eyes darken at that.
I realize what I said one second too late.
Mistake.
“My point,” I say quickly, “is that I don’t need multiple sets of lingerie that cost more than my first car.”
“Then do not think of them as something you need.”
“What should I think of them as?”
“Something I want.”
My stomach flips.
He reaches into the box and lifts the green bra from the tissue paper.
The lace drapes over his fingers.
“I would like to see this on you.”
My breath catches.
The image is immediate.
