“Maybe they already have an inkling.”My father looked up from his plate, as he spoke.

Flynn’s lips tightened.“I’m not sure the Flynn they think about has much in common with me, to be honest.Which always felt like a blessing and a curse.”

My mom reached out, to squeeze his hand.“I’ve known your parents now, what, thirty-odd years?I’d like to think we’re friends, as well as neighbors.I can’t imagine them letting a little thing like this get to them.Once they get past the surprise, anyway.”

“And who doesn’t love being a shock,” Flynn mused, expression pinched.

Mom patted his hand, then pulled hers away.“Oh, well. That’s just what kids do, honey.Shock is par for the course.”

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Icould understandwhy he wasn’t staying over, but that didn’t mean I liked it.I was also pretty sure, from Flynn’s smirk, that he’d seen my mood and was taking a sick sort of pride in being the cause of it.

“You’re pouting.”

I crossed my arms, resisting the urge to turn away.“I’m not.”

“Oh, my mistake, then.”From his tone, my protest had failed to convince him.

He stepped in closer, his chest only a few inches from mine.It was cold out, on the porch, but suddenly I couldn’t even feel it.

“Try not to jerk yourself silly, missing me,” he teased, softly.

“I already got off, remember,” I pointed out.“I can’t speak for you, but I’m gonna sleep like a baby.”

“Asshole,” he accused me, laughing.

“What happened to exercising self-control through sexual restraint?”

It was a good glare, in that it left me with no doubts whatsoever that Flynn was considering the merits of throttling me.

“Do you think your parents are watching?”

I resisted the instinctive urge to glance around.“I suspect they’re studiously avoiding paying us any attention at all, right now.”

“Oh,” Flynn murmured, “that’s good.”
