“I’m very good.” I looked out at the water. “I can’t believe I’ve been here and never actually been here.”

“We’re here now.” He said, eyes on the water.

“Yeah. We are.”

“I appreciate you for staying.”

“You knew I was staying.” I looked at him sideways. “As much as you like to act like you were the only one in love, I was too.”

“Was?”

I opened my mouth and closed it.

“Ducane, you know what I mean.”

“I don’t, though. I still do. I always will.”

I hated awkward silence, so I cleared my throat and reached for the hem of my linen top. I pulled it over my head, stepped out of the pants, and folded both over the back of the chair. The thong bikini I wore underneath was doing exactly what it was designed to do. I could see Ducane’s jaw flexing from where I stood. I tied my hair up and sat back down, paying him no mind.

“Tell me, Brain.” I turned toward him. “What’s the master plan?”

He looked at me a moment, jaw loose, eyes steady. He already knew how this was going to end.

“Make you fall back in love with me and then say a few vows.”

“Really now? That simple, huh?”

“That simple, unless we make it hard.”

I looked back at the water because looking at him while he said things made it hard for me to maintain composure.

The massage therapists appeared when we were far enough from the marina that the island was just a warm shape on the horizon. Two of them, quiet and professional, and for the next hour neither Ducane nor I said much of anything. The sun was warm on our backs, heating the oils, and the water was moving gently beneath us, and whatever tension I’d been carrying since that suite door opened started to release.

I turned my head at one point and found him already looking at me.

I burst into a fit of giggles.

“Why are you so goofy, Skye? What random thought did you just have?”

“I don’t know. I feel good. Loose. I’m shocked this is actually happening.”

“If you were home right now, what would Skye Campbell be doing?”

“Hmm.” I thought about it. “Probably with Airalynn and the kids. We’re still inseparable.”

“You think I don’t know that. Airalynn is your biggest fan. I can’t believe they have kids.”

“Love that girl and those kids,” I said softly, looking away.

“Mr. and Mrs. Simmons, lunch is ready.”

We thanked her, and I rolled over into his arms.

“So much audacity.”

“What I do?”

“I’ve been treated like your wife since we arrived. Something tells me that’s your doing.”
