If I didn’t speak English, Levi’s calm expression and tone might otherwise lead me to believe he’s enquiring about the weather.
“Again, what do we do with his head? His body? Burn it? Bury it? Carve his heart out?”
I huff a mirthless laugh, shaking my head.
“Do whatever you want with it. He can’t be killed... You reckless, impulsive, idiotic human. No matter what you do, he will take form again. And he’ll be furious. He’ll want revenge.”
Truly, this male either cares nothing for his life, or he’s suffering from one of the most common male-specific ailments:
Fatal confidence.
“We’re both going to spend an eternity in the lowest chasm of hell for this.”
Levi smirks. “Well, at least we’ll be together.”
I burst into a sob.
Levi heaves a sigh. “Fire it is.”
My gaze snags on the seeping black and gold vapors from Azrael’s body like some great, ominous exhalation. Levi shifts to follow my gaze, immediately dropping Azrael’s head as he quickly reloads his gun. Darkness coalesces to take the form of a vaguely Azrael-shaped shadow.
This is it.
We’re going to die now.
Levi uselessly fires his gun—it does nothing to stall the specter now floating towards him. Quicker than our eyes can even trace, Azrael’s shadow closes the distance between them, towering over him as his hand curls around Levi’s throat. Before I can think better of it, I rush forward, trying to separate them.
Azrael’s shadow’s flesh seems to only be solid where he wills it. My hands pass uselessly through his arms until an expanseof dark flesh briefly appears at his chest. Magic zings down my arm, causing even the follicles of hair on my head to prickle and burn.
“Azrael, please?—”
Azrael’s void-like face and dark, glittering eyes glance briefly at me before he lowers his face to Levi’s.
The words he speaks are not heard with my ears, but insteadscrapethrough my mind.
“You know not what you do, fragile human.”
His fist tightens around Levi’s throat as he lifts him off the ground.
Feet dangling, Levi buries his serrated blade into the specter’s chest to little effect. He merely looks down at the handle of the blade sticking out of his only partially corporeal body before looking back up at Levi, choking, and then to me as I continue to beg him to stop.
Something in his gaze softens before, in awhooshof black vapors curling inwards, he evaporates entirely. Levi’s feet hit the ground, knees buckling as he coughs violently to catch his breath.
Sniffling and drawing in a deep breath, I swipe angry, frustrated, fucking traumatized tears as I turn towards Levi.
“Come with me.”
LEVI
“Touch nothing, you blasted imbecile.” Violette’s voice is an angry hiss as she leads me into her workshop after collecting Azrael’s head. It’s a mad scientist’s dream. Double the magnitude of what she has going on in her kitchen. There’s also some kind of strange carpentry workbench on one side of the room, which is directly where she heads.
My body hums with the adrenaline still coursing through my veins after nearly being strangled to death by a ghost or whatever the fuck thatwas.
Even if he was holding back.
I know all too well what it feels like to have someone trulytryto kill you.
And that wasn’t it.
