“That’s good. A good idea, I mean.”

“Yeah. It is.”

She slipped out of the bed, or at least, did her best to, considering she was still half swaddled, and grabbed her boots and her jeans.

While she was beginning to get dressed, he went and retrieved her bra from the light fixture and brought her T-shirt.

“So, do we make a schedule or…”

“No. We don’t make a sex schedule.”

She tried to relax. It didn’t need to be that… Planned, she supposed. They had opened the door to this. Which meant that sometimes it was going to happen.

“I really would like to do the stargazing? I mean wayfinding. I mean…”

“We can do that.”

“Great. And then after that, maybe you can help me figure out how to ride a horse.”

Wow. She really was desperate if she was pushing it to horse riding. That was kind of insane.

Considering she had been avoiding that with intent sinceshe had moved here. Apparently, Zane had taken her best intentions and twisted them up.

“If you’d like.”

“I would.”

She got dressed and was surprised when he walked her out to the car. But before she got in, he grabbed a hold of her and gave her a kiss. She melted into him. It felt so good to be able to do this. To no longer be resisting it. To just… Be able to touch him. To be able to kiss him. She really didn’t want to go home. But she needed to be in the bakery by four in the morning, and she not only needed sleep, she needed her own bed, and all of her toiletries.

“Good night,” she said.

He nodded, but didn’t say it back, and that was okay. She slipped into the car, and buckled up, and it wasn’t until she was halfway between his house and hers that she let out a screech.

She had slept with Zane Barton.

And she was going to do it again.

This was the real adventure.

She felt giddy.

It was about damn time.

Chapter Fourteen

The bakery was extremely busy the next morning, and it was good that she had gone in to get started when she did, because she was completely run off her feet with customers. She took a special order for delivery the following morning, three dozen strawberry rolls, and three dozen lemon sunshine rolls, and three dozen cinnamon rolls for a family reunion breakfast. That was happening over at the hotel, and apparently, the family had rented out most of a block of rooms.

She wanted to text Zane and tease him about whether or not they were going to take a ride on his property, but she didn’t have the time. She thought about Zane off and on all morning.

It was only six, but he hadn’t been in yet for his treat, and she hoped that he would come. She hoped he wasn’t changing his mind, hoped that he wasn’t now wanting to avoid her after what had happened.

Because if he did that, she would have no one to talk to but herself, and last night the idea of nobody knowing had felt a little bit comforting, but today, it felt scary and isolating, because she had been counting on at least being able to share it with him for a little bit longer.

This was a problem already. She had to figure out some way to avoid being completely obsessed with him, because that was a path to madness as far as she was concerned.

This was good because it was something she’d never dealt with or experienced before. It was also bad because she’d never experienced it before, and she didn’t know how to hold onto both of those things at once. She’d been fascinated with Zane before – obsessed, if she were being honest, which she’d rather not be — and now it was something else.

If she’d hoped for even a moment that this would demystify him and therefore make this less obsessing, she had been a fool.
