“I just woke up.” I yawn and stretch. “Bad dream.”

Aiden bends down to kiss the top of my head and then makes his way to the bathroom.

“Why were you gone so long?” I ask, my voice still thready from sleep.

“Long meeting,” he mutters with a sigh, but offers nothing more.

I hear the sink running for a few minutes, then the shower, and I consider joining him, but my eyes flutter closed and then he’s crawling into bed beside me, naked and still steamy from the shower.

I breathe out a sigh when his heavy, warm chest presses into my back. After that terrible dream, he came home just in time.

“Dicky’s pissed that I cockblocked him by making him be your guard dog.” He chuckles.

I laugh and scoot back, sinking deeper into him.

“He thinks he was making progress with Libby,” Aiden adds, swiping all my hair from my shoulder.

“Libby wouldn’t have slept with him anyway. She’s holding out for a ranked member. She’s told us all countless times.”

“That so?” I feel his lips softly touch my shoulder and goose bumps follow in his wake.

“Yes, she’s jealous of me.” I roll over in his arms.

His hair is damp and wavy, and while the light in here is dim, those steely blue eyes are intense in the moonlight.

“Fuck me, you’re beautiful,” he says gruffly before coaxing my chin up to kiss it. He smells like mint but still has that hint of smoke, and it’s a scent of comfort for me now.

“You’re not so bad either,” I tell him, nuzzling as close as I can to kiss him on the chin then smooth his dark-blond hair behind his ear, twisting a lock in my fingers.

“Tell me about your dream,” he whispers.

This moment is oddly intimate. Lying here like we just belong together, in the midst of this party, in the center of his universe, far from home.

My natural instinct is to shy away from talking about Nic, or my dream, because it doesn’t even make sense, but I decide to tell him every detail, including what I saw tonight and my assumption about Dagger.

He listens intently, stroking my shoulder with his thumb, then says, “Dagger is a problem. I told Archer when we get back, we’re gonna have a chat.”

“I have the worst feeling it was him. I mean, the shoe fits.”

“I don’t know yet, but either way, Mia”—his arms tighten around me, and I feel so safe—“Iwillprotect you. You’re no longer alone in this fight, or any other. Is that clear?”

I swallow down the lump in my throat and nod as he continues. “I’m gonna try to get into the penitentiary and meet with an old member as soon as I can. It takes some time to get in, since he’s in maximum. If anyone heard rumblings then about Dagger being involved with your sister, it would be him. He was close with Marco and Gator.”

He takes a deep breath and settles against me.

“What do you always say?” He smirks. “Dagger is a problem for tomorrow.”

“You don’t handle your problems like that.” I joke with him, pinching his chiseled abs.

“I do today. I have more pressing things to worry about.” He slides his hand over my waist to my ass. “Are you sore?”

Again, my chest twists with the way his brows knot as he asks. I struggle tolethim care and worry about me, but it feels…nice that he does.

I kiss him on the lips. “A little, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. You always this concerned about your employees?” I flirt, selfishly needing him to push the darkness of my dream away and fill my head with thoughts of us instead.

Aiden tugs me even closer. His lips turn up in a grin as his hand drifts over my hips, between my thighs, and into my panties. I hum as the pad of his thick middle finger finds my clit, and he’s still smiling at me.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” I narrow my eyes at him.
