CHAPTER6
The trip to the small grocery store in town had been uneventful. The store had been surprisingly empty for a Saturday morning on a holiday weekend.
Abbie was grateful for small, weird blessings.
Now she stood in the kitchen wearing nothing but a pair of underwear, as promised, and the bra she’d negotiated since there was no apron to be found.Derek leaned against the counter to her right, arms crossed against his bare chest.During the renegotiation of the baking and underwear agreement, she stipulated that if she was going to be mostly naked, then so was he.
The ingredients and everything they needed were laid out neatly on the island in front of them. There was even an outlet on the side of the island. The perfect kitchen.
She’d found some almost new cookie sheets in one of the cabinets, and after a wash and some wax paper lining, they were ready for cookie dough.
“I’m glad you thought to grab measuring spoons and a hand mixer. But you didn’t have to pay for everything.”
“I’m more than happy to.”He turned to face her, a hand on his hip.Abbie glanced from the corner of her eye.Derek’s fingers were dangerously close to the elastic band of his boxer briefs, his cock outlined in the fabric.
She cleared her throat.“Well, I appreciate it.”
“Tell me what we’re doing here.”
“You’ve never made cookies?”
Derek shook his head.“Not from total scratch like this.”
“The correct way to do it is to measure by weight, but...that’s not how I do it because I’m not a professional and I don’t sell my cookies. So, I just use the regular measuring cups and adjust my measurements a smidge. You’re going to love them, I promise.”
“I never doubted.”Derek licked his lips.Abbie’s knees wobbled ever so slightly.
“First thing is to get the flour, salt, and baking soda in a medium bowl together.Measurements are on the bag of chocolate chips.I’ll do the butter, sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla.”
Derek bumped his hip against hers.“I like it when you’re bossy.”
“I’ll make a note of that for later.”
As Derek measured out his ingredients, Abbie got the rest ready for the large bowl serving as a replacement for her stand mixer. They worked together quietly to get everything mixed and laid out on the various cookie sheets, Derek asking the occasional question about why she did something a certain way.
“Because that’s how my grandmother taught me,” was her most common answer.“Nobody taught you how to bake?”She showed him how to scoop the dough with a spoon and plop it onto the wax-paper-lined baking sheets.
Derek followed suit, with a much larger glob of cookie dough.“I can cook, but my mom didn’t do much baking, preferring to order dessert from the bakery. She claimed she was too tired after cooking.”
“Grandmother?”
Sadness clouded his face for a moment.“She passed before I was old enough to learn from her.My mom has a recipe book somewhere, but I never opened it.”
They worked together to line their own sheets, and before long they were scraping the bottom of the mixing bowl.
She nodded.“I have a few of those, myself.”
Abbie had just placed the sheets in the oven, closed the door, and set the timer on her phone when a small poof of flour exploded on her arm.Derek stood a couple of feet away, a huge grin on his face.He was beautiful, bare chest and toned muscle aside. His smile lit up his eyes, and it took Abbie’s breath away. How was she not supposed to fall for this man?
“Oh.Is that how it’s going to go?Okay then.”She reached for the still open bag of flour and tossed a small handful at Derek’s chest. It landed, and Derek let out the most beautiful laugh she’d ever heard, full and free.
He moved so fast she’d barely registered that she needed to run before he snagged the bag of flour and grabbed another handful. She squealed and made a break for the other side of the island, dodging his next toss.Flour bloomed across the front of the refrigerator and swept to the floor.
“No fair, you have the entire bag!”
“Better think ahead next time.”He threw another small handful, but she ducked in time. She popped her head up and stuck her tongue out at him.
“I have better uses for your tongue, sweets.”
