“I… I sang for him on stage.” A hint of burnt sugar fear shot through her scent.

“On stage? When?” I asked. Wow. She wouldn’t even sing karaoke with me.

“Sound check.” Saoirse told me about going with him to sound check and him taking the song she’d sang last night and mixing it. “Then he started to rap in Spanish. Herappedwhile I sang the song my gran taught me, while warehouse music played."

“That sounds incredible. Also, I’m proud ofyou.” I kissed her cheek.

“I felt wonderful. Everything blended perfectly. But his mind does that, putting things together you wouldn’t think would work,” she added.

Did he now?

“Are you going to perform with him tonight?” I asked.

“Of course not. I was just indulging his curiosity. He did ask if I’d record it so he could mix it. I… no. No.” She shook her head.

Oh? She wanted to.

“I think that would be fun, then he could use it, and you’d be anonymous. And he could make it up to you?” A hot air balloon ride? That sounded amazing.

“No more making it up to me. I’ll think about it.” Sighing, she took a sip of her tea. “But I can’t have a guy like that catching feelings for me.”

“Because he’s an alpha? Because he’s famous? I mean, obvi if you don’t feel anything for him, cut him loose, but if you do, what is really stopping you?” There were a lot of very valid things to consider in having a relationship with him.

“I love you and your big, sweet, heart.” She kissed me. “Guys like Dusty aren’t for women like me. Also, could he really love me?”

“I mean Carlos cares for me. Sometimes different is good. But I get it.” I didn’t mind playing with fire. My dads would bail me out, and my last name got me far.

Saoirse was the practical one, which was why she made such a good partner, both for work and romantically.

Still. Saoirse and a rockstar. Huh.

While I didn't know Dusty well, it seemed like he might actually be able to understand her. She could use a kind guy who was into grand romantic gestures.

But that was something she’d have to figure out on her own.

Chapter Fifteen

Dusty

“Everything’s set for tonight?” I asked Kace, as I sat with him, Bailey, and Tyrell in the outdoor bar at the lodge, having a quick little team meeting before our big night.

It was almost dark, the patio set up with lots of lights and heater lamps. People coming off the slopes for a drink and snack filled the tables and crowded around the fire pits.

Kace checked his phone. “The crew’s ready. Your fans are ready. I’m so fucking excited for you. Who would have thought that the guy who used to record in the shower would be here?”

“I’m glad you’re here to share this with me.” I’d put in a shit-ton of hard work. There were years of playing small venues for uninterested crowds, getting shit on social media, and all the hard work that comes with trying to make it as a creative that no one ever talks about.

But I also wouldn’t have made it without the support of my family, friends, and my team.

“Mrs. Johnson can suck it.” Tyrell held up his beer.

“Here, here.” I tapped my glass to his. That was my high school music teacher who thought my music was worthless.

“You have a meet and greet soon at that club in town,” Kace added.

“Yes.” It was something my label had arranged.

My eyes fell on Saoirse, who’d just walked into the bar with Fiona, her arm around her.
