“Then it’s me,” I say with a smile. “Now, go make my hot chocolate.”
“Bossy,” he gets up, dusting off his pants before holding out a hand for me. I take it, wrapping my fingers around his as he hauls me up.
He walks ahead, but I’m stuck where I stand, the events of today replaying in my head. We had so much fun…
Far more fun than I would have had with Dylan. He usually gets too cold after a solid ten minutes in and then decides it’s time to retire inside for the rest of the day. Where has that spark gone? We used to do this for hours, our cheeks red and our hands heavy with the cold.
What happened to us…
“You coming?” Kaden calls, snapping me back to reality.
I swallow past the thick emotion in my throat before following him inside.
Chapter forty-nine
Kaden
She’sstillthinkingaboutthat fucker. I can tell from the droop in her frame and the contemplation behind her eyes. I knew a snow day wouldn’t be enough to erase their history, but I have plenty of time before Dylan returns to leave a lasting impression.
He’ll be out of pocket for a while, which leaves Melody all to me. My sources that are tracking him said he’s caught up in his ownaffairsand not concerned with the fiancée he left behind.
Don’t worry, Dyl. I’ll take good care of her.
I hold the two steaming mugs in my hands as I pad closer to the sofa. Melody is flicking through the movies, her elbow held by the armrest as she leans on her knuckle. She seems faraway, her eyes not seeing what’s in front of her when I hand the mug over.
She grabs it gingerly, taking a sip and moaning. The sound shoots straight to my cock as I sit down beside her. Our sides touch as I tug part of her blanket over me.
“Why are you sitting so close?” She whispers.
Mom is in the kitchen, flipping through a catalog as she hunts for wedding ideas. Dad is at the dining room table, a pair of spectacles on the tip of his nose as he scrolls through his phone. They aren’t paying us any mind.
I rest my hand between us, my pinky twitching and itching to graze her. “I was cold,” I lie.
Her eyes narrow. “Mhmm. Hands to yourself.”
She won’t be saying that in the next thirty minutes. Not with the sleep aid I slipped in her drink. It won’t put her in a coma, but it will make her too drowsy to fight me. Not that she would, but I like the way she looks when she’s tired. Her eyes get hooded and seductive, and I can see her pretty pulse in her neck.
I have a fascination with watching her sleep.
It’s why I always come to her at night. I used to sit up long after she had gone to bed just to stare at her for hours until I couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore.
Mom and Dad talk quietly from behind us as the beginning credits roll. Melody sips her hot chocolate, her hands wrapped around the mug to warm herself as she watches the TV. Every drink she takes makes me fucking harder for her, and I shift beneath the blanket to adjust myself. She doesn’t notice my arousal, and it makes a sick smile touch my lips.
“The roads should be clear enough,” Dad says from the kitchen. “Would you go to lunch with me?”
“Of course,” Mom says as she grabs her purse. She comes over to us before kissing the tops of our heads. “Be good.”
Melody smiles as they leave, then returns to the screen. Some guy is trying to win his ex-girlfriend back with grand gestures and flowers that she isn’t biting on. My sister is completely invested in the actors on the TV when her body begins to curl subtly. Her blinks have become slower, more languid as she continues to sip.
I gently take the cup from her, sliding it onto the coffee table before settling back and wrapping an arm around her shoulders. I pull her into my side, letting her rest her head on my chest as her hand curls into my shirt.
“Kaden…” She says sleepily, her eyes fluttering until they close. She forces them open, but she’s losing the battle.
I curl my hand around her chin, tilting her face up to me as I press my lips to hers. She tries to draw back, but I hold her in place, keeping her mouth on mine as my tongue swipes across the seam of her lips.
She draws back again, frowning at me as she wavers in place. “What are you doing?”
“Shhh,” I shush her as my hand combs into her hair. “You’re dreaming.”
