“I’m not going down without a fight.”

Jack starts laughing, the sound echoing in my head as I storm off to look for London.

Chapter Twenty-Five

London

“Are you sure this will work?”

“I’m sure.”

My feet touch the floor, and I stand up. “What about my parents?”

“I haven’t gotten in touch with them yet.”

I switch the phone to my other ear. “I’ll do that.”

“London, are you—”

“I’m sure,” I interrupt. “This is the only thing that makes sense.”

“Okay.”

“It’ll work,” I repeat, mostly to myself. “It has to.”

Miss Deveroux sighs on the other end. “Okay, I’ll meet you at midnight.”

I blow out a breath. “See you then.”

After I hang up, I shove the phone into my pocket and begin to pace, my heart pounding uneasily. My thoughts are tripping over each other as I shove my hands into my pockets and trace the outline of the phone.

This is it. You’re really going through with it?

I want to stay and help Mason fight, but I can’t be selfish where the baby is concerned.

I stop in front of the window and cup my stomach. “I’ll keep us safe, I promise.”

With a sigh, I look down, and tears fill my eyes.

My throat is tight as I reach up to push the curtain aside and look out at the moonlight estate far below.

You need a game plan. Getting out isn’t going to be your only problem. How will you survive under an alias? You can do this. You can figure this out. At least you won’t be alone.

After several deep breaths, I take the phone back out and dial my mother’s number. It rings a few times and goes to voicemail. My chest is tight as I call my father and wait.

Damn it.

Why aren’t they answering?

My phone makes a low whooshing sound as I send them both a coded message, a heavy feeling settling in me. My throat closes again as I squeeze my eyes shut.

A lone tear slides down my cheek and onto the desk. I use the back of my hand to wipe my face. Slowly, I open the laptop and wait for it to start up. As soon as it does, my fingers hover over the keyboard, and the voice in my head grows louder.

Don’t do this. You can’t leave like this.

I’m steeling myself when I hear footsteps outside the door. Suddenly, the door to the room bursts open, and Mason walks in with Katia on his heels. She ignores me and goes straight to the window.

Mason covers the distance between us, cups my face in his hands, and presses his forehead to mine.
