“So are you going to take that sixpence?” he asked, grinning from ear to ear as he retrieved his hat and perched it back on his head, all calm and collected and—

Momzer. Complete momzer.Hannah searched her brain for a cutting remark to hurl back at him because that couldn’t stand, nor could the kiss have been so—

“Why don’t you call it a draw?” a female voice called from behind her. Hannah spun around to find her sister smiling slyly just inside the curtain, broom in her hand. “I didn’t want to interrupt, but you have a visitor. At the back door.”

“Tamar.” Hannah coughed a little, her face heating. She placed herself between her sister and the man whose grin only seemed to grow. “Mr. Weiss was just leaving.”

Taking care to stay between them, she pushed him past her sister and into the front of the store as Tamar followed. Fast as she could, Hannah swung open thedoor, letting the chilly air brush over them both, as if it could soothe all the lust burning inside her.

Mr. Weiss locked eyes with her yet again, that knowing look, both irritating and charming, still on his face.

He nodded his head. “Good day, Miss Moses.” He leaned over and indicated to Tamar. “And Miss Moses. Thank you so much for your hospitality.” Then giving a little salute, he disappeared into the crowded street, leaving her staring after him as the wind whipped snow up around her feet.

With a sigh, she retreated back into the store and crossed to the rear entrance into the alley. Hopefully, her “visitor” would offer her an extra job, not demand more payment.

Given her luck, it would probably be the latter.
