Why didn’t he just come to me for money? I’m wracking my brain for a solution. And only one comes to mind.
Going to my friend, Stevie, and asking if she can talk to her son. I hate asking for favors, but this situation warrants a little begging.
Men have been killed for far less than what Damon owes.
“Listen, I can’t guarantee anything. But let me talk to Stevie and see if she can do anything. Don’t do anything until I talk to you again. For the love of God, lay low.”
He slowly nods. Damon’s not one for following orders, so we’ll see how this goes.
Reaching in my pocket, I pull out two twenty dollar bills. I hand the money over, saying deathly low, “Take them to the diner for dinner. If you so much as take one step into this basement with them again, Dixon will be the least of your concerns.”
He takes the money, stuffing it in his pocket. “Yes, ma’am. I really am sorry, Auntie Bill.”
Wordlessly, I nod. Opening the office door, I paste on a wide smile. “Time to go, girls. Damon is treating his two favorite girls to dinner and ice-cream sundaes!”
They jump up from the couch, rushing over. “Thanks, Auntie Bill!” They shriek at the same time.
A round of hugs and I usher them back upstairs, through the bar, and out the door.Finally.
Walking back downstairs, I paste on my game face. The one that tells the underbelly, you may run your territory, but here, you play by my rules.
This is my house.
