He needed to get out of here.
“Of course, Master Law.”Morgan hopped up, giving her friends a wave before hurrying along. Her friends looked curious, but they didn’t get the chance to ask what was going on.
Law was already moving, still holding Iris’ hand—except she was pulling back against him.
“Woah, Master Law, wait.Where are we going?”
Coming to a halt, he turned to face her.He could see the worry in her eyes but couldn’t do anything about his expression. It felt tight on his face as though his skin was stretched over his skull.
“Hey, it’s okay—let’s go over to the bar and talk about it.”Iris’ expression turned comforting, her tone soothing, dark eyes filled with sympathy. She put her free hand on the outside of his, so she was holding his hand with both of hers as her fingers gently stroked his skin.“We can have a drink, hang out, and talk things over.”
Have a drink.
She didn’t know how badly he wanted to.
No idea.
Because he hadn’t told her the full truth about his past.
The words wouldn’t come now, either.
It felt as if someone had wired his jaw shut, and there was a roaring in his ears, drowning out all the other sounds around them.
He couldn’t think.
He couldn’t breathe.
Bands were tightening around his chest, locking on and squeezing the air out of his lungs.
Get out.Get out now.
It wasn’t a thought; it was an impulse.
He jerked his hand away from hers, seeing only a flash of her shocked expression as he turned and rushed from the room without her.
ChapterTwenty-Eight
Iris
Frozen in place, Iris’ gaped as Law ran away from her.Well, he wasn’t actually running, but he was moving fast enough he might as well be.Before she’d recovered, he was already through the door into the lobby. The sight of the door swinging shut was what finally got her moving—except someone grabbed her arm.
“What just happened?”Master Asad’s voice was harsher than she’d ever heard before, and he had a grip like a steel cage.Iris tried to jerk away as she answered him, but it wasn’t an easy hold to break.
“I don’t know!”She turned, purposefully jerking her arm to where his fingers and thumb met, the weakest part of his grip.Three cheers for Angel’s self-defense class because it worked, and she took off after Law.She could hear Master Asad’s low curse behind her, but she ignored him as she darted for the door.
Blowing through the lobby, she ran outside—straight into Master Kincaid. He grabbed her upper arms, both of them, to steady her but didn’t let go.Damn these interfering Doms.Iris tried to look around him, trying to figure out where Law had gone.
“What is going on?Where is Law going?”Master Kincaid’s questions were drowned out by the sound of Master Asad coming through the door behind her and cursing as he came to an abrupt halt. She actually felt the air move behind her as he managed not to run into her, but he came damn close.
Before she could answer, she heard the sound of a car starting.
“Shit!Where’s he going?”she wailed, yanking away from Master Kincaid. It didn’t work quite as well as it had with Master Asad since he was holding both her hands, but she got to the side of him.Enough that she saw Master Law’s car back up, then peel out of the parking lot.
“Law!”She screamed his name at the back of his car, anger rising inside her as she realized he was just driving away without saying anything to her, without explaining. What the fuck was going on?
A blur of movement aimed at Law’s car.
The sound of metal crunching against metal.
