He closes his eyes. Just briefly. Like he’s recalibrating everything he thought he knew.

“I’m not afraid ofyou,” he says.

“But you’re afraid of what happensif.”

Silence again.

Then:

“Yeah.”

We both exhale.

The room hums.

The air between us is hot. Charged. Not like electricity—but like inertia.

If either of us leans even amillimeter, something’s going to break.

I whisper, “This isn’t a mistake, Kalev.”

He swallows.

“It’s a risk,” I add. “But some risks are worth it.”

His hand twitches, like he wants to touch me. But he doesn’t.

Neither do I.

We just sit there. Shoulders almost touching.

And neither of us moves away.

CHAPTER 15

KALEV

The data pings confirmation. Packet integrity intact. Routes verified. And just like that, the mission shifts again—from long game to calculated next step. My pulse doesn’t spike from the intel. It spikes because she’s in the room when it happens.

Leah’s across from me, fingers ghosting over the console. That mouth tight with focus, brows drawn. She’s always a step ahead now—eyes sharper, instincts cleaner. I clock it all. Clock her.

And she feels it. The look I give her.

She lifts her head slowly. Meets my eyes.

The air thickens instantly.

She says nothing.

I don’t either.

I move first.

I close the distance between us in three strides. I don’t ask. I don’t hesitate. My hand slides behind her neck, and when her breath hitches, I pause—just long enough for her to pull back if she wanted to.

She doesn’t.

She leans into it.
