“No, it doesn’t.” My arm tightened around her. “Being your stepdad?—”

“Dad. I don’t consider you my stepdad.”

I softly smiled. “Being your dad isn’t something I tolerate or manage to fit into my schedule. It’s one of the greatest privileges of my life.”

“Thanks, Dad.” She lay her head on my shoulder. “And just so you know, I’ve got your back when things settle, and mom has time to really think about what you did. You’re going to need backup.”

I chuckled. “Thanks, kid.” I kissed the side of her head. “I don’t know about you, but I’m starving. I’ll order a pizza for dinner.”

“Don’t forget the breadsticks.”

“I won’t. How about you come downstairs and be with your family?”

“I’ll be down in a while. I need to call Maya. She’s been blowing up my phone.”

“Okay.” I climbed off the bed and walked out of the room.

Chapter Forty-Five

Samantha

“I can’t believe Wes bought the building and forced them to sell you that dress,” Greta said as we stepped into Kleinfeld’s. “That, my friend, is some fucking soul love.”

I laughed. “I know. I can’t even be mad at him. Especially after what he said to Zoey.”

“Were you spying on their conversation?”

“Maybe.” I smiled. “How did I get so lucky, Greta?”

“You can thank your daughter for that one.”

“Oh, hello, Miss Hollis.” The blonde consultant smiled. “I have your dress in the fitting room for you to put on.”

“Thank you.”

After we left the shop, I hugged Greta goodbye. “Thanks for coming with me.”

“You know there’s no place I’d rather be. I’ll call you later.”

Ben climbed out of the Escalade, folded the stroller, and put it in the back, while I strapped Charlotte into her car seat.

“Can you take me to the office, Ben?”

“Of course, Sam.”

Once we reached Castile Properties, I put Charlotte inside the stroller and took the elevator up.

“Hi, Rose. Is he in there?”

“Hi, Sam.” She grinned. “Oh my gosh. She’s growing so fast. Yes, he’s in there.”

I slowly opened the door, and Wes looked up from his computer.

“What a nice surprise.” He grinned, getting up from his seat. He walked over, kissed me, and took Charlotte from her stroller. “What brings you by?”

“I want Scott’s number.”

“I was waiting for you to ask for that.”
