"What's got you thinking so hard?"Nikolai scraped up the last of the food on his plate.

Frode shook his head."Nothing."

"Don't lie."

Frode snorted."Declan."

Nikolai nodded."Did you live together?"

"No."Frode almost sounded panicky. The idea of having Declan in his house permanently had him breaking out in a cold sweat.

Nikolai's face was expressionless, but his eyes swept over Frode's face.Assessing."How long have you lived here?"

"About five years."

"And it's about five years since you and Declan broke up?"

How did he know?Frode shrugged."A little more than five years, but I moved here shortly after, yes."

"So Declan has never been here."

No, he hadn't.Frode narrowed his eyes."Why?"

Nikolai snatched his beer and leaned back against the backrest."Only curious. If you touch something in here, you won't see him."

True.Frode looked at him, not sure what he was getting at.

"But you lived with the other guy."

"What's this? Why do you want to talk about my exes?"

Nikolai smiled and it looked genuine."Only curious.Hjalmar liked your college boyfriend but not Declan."

"Chance, yes I know."

"Right, Chance, and you lived with him."

Frode nodded."I did."

"And he wasn't disappointed when you didn't pin him to the door when he entered the apartment."

Frode rolled his eyes."It wasn't in Chance's nature to be disappointed."

There was a small smile on Nikolai's lips as he nodded.Frode didn't get it.What was he happy about?

"Because?"Nikolai sipped his beer.

A loud sigh left Frode without his permission."How the fuck should I know? You want to watch a game or not?"

There was no game on.Frode had switched on the TV but hadn't changed from the news channel, so it wasn't Nikolai's fault he couldn't shut up and watch the game--whatever game they were going to watch.

Nikolai laughed.Laughed.The bastard.

Frode flipped through the channels and found a basketball match, not his favorite sport to watch, but what can you do?

"Who are we rooting for?"

"No idea, I don't follow basketball."
