“I don’t regret my kids, but I didn’t want them.”
“What about now?”Maeve asked.
He stopped near the lake and put both of his hands on her waist, pulling her in close.“You want to know if I want kids now?”
She nodded.“Like you said, people change.”
“Do you want kids now?”
“Yeah, I do,” she said.
He wanted her swollen with his child.“I’m open to more kids.”
“What do you think Nancy would think of you having more kids?”
He leaned in close so his lips were next to her ear.“In all honesty, I don’t give a fuck what my ex-wife thinks about me having kids.”He lifted her up in his arms.“I think it’s time we go for a little swim.”
She let out a squeal and wriggled in his arms.“What if there’s a lake monster?”
“There’s no lake monster.”He walked her into the lake, and she wrapped her arms around him, and her grip tightened. He had absolutely no problem with how she held onto him.
It felt good to hold her.“You’re being insane.”
Tensing up, Doc used his strength and threw her into the water. She came up seconds later, laughing, but then pushed some water toward him, splashing him.“How do you like it?”she asked.
He laughed right along with her, and they both splashed water at each other before he then attacked across and wrapped his arms around her.She circled her legs around his waist, and he pushed her hair off her face, cupping her, and staring into her light amber eyes.He could look at her all day long.
“You’re beautiful.You know that, right?”he asked.
“I bet you say that to all the girls.”
“I don’t.”He was not known for his compliments.Girls could come and go, but that didn’t mean they meant anything to him.She was special.“Also, if you want a baby, I’d be happy to put a baby inside you.”
Maeve’s mouth dropped open.“A baby is a big responsibility.”
“I know.”
“That’s like, a massive commitment.”
“I know.”
“I don’t think you understand what that means. We’d be connected for life through a child.”
“I’m not going anywhere, Maeve.”
He saw he’d shocked her.“Are you worried?”he asked.
“I’m not worried.I’m in shock.I thought most men would be trying to run away from commitment or responsibility.”
“I’m not that kind of guy.If you want a kid, I’ll give you one and I’m done looking for anyone else.”
Maeve had her fingers locked together around the back of his neck, and her gaze kept searching his.
He couldn’t help but laugh.“I’ve shocked you.”
“I don’t know what to say.”
“Well, you can hold all the cards.I’ll stop using a rubber.”He knew he’d already stopped using condoms.“And you make the decision to either use contraceptive or not.I’m in this for the long haul.I’m not holding back.As far as I’m concerned, you’re mine, Maeve.”
