“Nope.” I give him a be-serious look. “Like that would be possible with six older brothers and an entire group of uncles who all know a hundred ways to kill a man.”
An amused expression flashes over his face, then asks, “Have you been kissed?”
Oh.
Suddenly feeling nervous, I shift on his lap as I shake my head. “Didn’t get around to crossing that one off my list.”
“You have a list?” Enzo asks, his tone playful.
“A very long one.”
“Are you going to show me?”
“Not a snowball’s chance in hell. Ninety percent of the list revolves around you,” I tease him. “A girl’s gotta have some secrets.”
“Hmm…” It sounds like a predatory growl straight from his chest. I even feel it beneath my hand.
Screw a kaleidoscope of butterflies. Hordes of bison descend on my stomach, and a wave of intense tingles ripples up my arm, all the way to my heart, making the organ skip a beat.
As I stare at Enzo, his expression changes to one I’ve never seen before. His eyes look like molten lava, and desire is etched into his features.
Holy crap. Is he thinking of kissing me?
My heartbeat speeds up incredibly fast, and I try not to get my hopes up.
Chapter 26
Rosie
Enzo’s eyes drift over my face as he lifts his hand and cups my cheek. My pulse instantly kicks into overdrive when his gaze drops to my mouth.
Oh, Jesus. It’s happening.
When my breathing speeds up way too fast, he tilts his head and whispers, “You’re going to pass out on me. Take deeper breaths.”
A wave of embarrassment hits me right in the gut, and as I begin to pull away, he moves his hand to the back of my head and leans into me. The instant his cheek brushes against mine, every muscle in my body freezes and my eyes go wide as saucers.
“Just focus on me.” His breaths ghost over my skin right before he presses a kiss to my jaw. “There’s no need to be nervous or embarrassed. It’s just us.”
His voice is so damn low and seductive, I go weak in the knees and grab hold of his shoulder with my left hand while he keeps my right imprisoned against his chest.
Holy shit, this is intense.
Then I feel Enzo’s heart beating faster, and I realize why he placed my hand there. It’s so I can feel that he’s affected too, and it’s not just me.
His fingers tighten slightly in my hair, and he presses his forehead to mine, and we stay like this for a moment, neither of us speaking.
Emotion wells in my chest, and a lump forms in my throat.
His eyes roam over my face, lingering on my eyes, my cheeks, my mouth, and every time they return to mine, my heart squeezes a little tighter.
The silence isn’t uncomfortable. Instead, it feels precious, like he’s giving me time to catch up to the fact that this is really happening.
We’re happening.
After all these years, Enzo is holding me while I’m on his lap and giving me the time I need to prepare myself for our first kiss.
I swallow hard and whisper, “Enzo.”
