“That was a great pitch, buddy.”
“Thanks!” Cooper breaks free from his mom and turns to me. “Sawyer, guess what? The catcher said I should play for the Tridents some day!”
Willow ruffles his hair. “Monty doesn’t say things like that unless he means it. You really did impress him.”
We make our way up to the box Willow reserved for us, and I let out a wolf whistle as I take it all in. “Wills, this is incredible.”
She takes a little bow, then leads us over to the bar area. “Yeah, there’s gotta be some perks to being related to the owner. This is one of them.”
We grab food and drinks and settle in to watch the game. The Tridents win with a strong lead, and the stadium erupts in cheers. The postgame celebrations are fun to watch with the players and their families flooding the field. But then Willow leans forward, peering down at something going on.
“You’ve got to be freaking kidding me,” she shrieks as one of the veteran pitchers, Rafe Montego, pulls a woman and a teenage boy over to an open spot on the field and drops down on one knee.
Willow grabs the handheld radio attached to her hip and starts barking orders into it. “Tell me you’ve got a crew on this, Roger! Why the hell did no one tell me this was going on? What do youmeanno one knew? That idiot. I’m going to kill him. Yes, I know it’s very romantic, but this is the kind of thing the media team needs to know about!”
Cooper leans over. “Aunt Willow is really mad. What’s going on?”
I look at Tori. “You can take this one, Mom.”
Tori’s eyes are dancing between her best friend, who’s storming out of the box while still yelling into her radio, and the field. “Well, it certainly looks like that player is about to ask his girlfriend to marry him. And I think Aunt Willow is mad because she didn’t know.”
“Why does she need to know? He’s not proposing toher,” Cooper astutely observes. I hide my laugh and gesture at Tori to handle this one as well.
“That’s true. But her job means she has to be aware of these kinds of things because of the attention everyone is giving them. Aunt Willow needs to help handle it.”
Cooper thinks about it for a second, then shrugs. “’Kay. I’m gonna get more popcorn.” He wanders off just as another loud cheer goes up. We turn to see Rafe stand up and the woman throw her arms around him.
“Guess she said yes,” I comment, wrapping my arm around Tori’s waist.
“That is so unbelievably romantic.” Tori leans her head on my shoulder. “I couldn’t have written it better myself.”
“I dunno,” I murmur into her hair as I press my lips to the top of her head. “I think our story is even more romantic.”
She tilts her head up and I press my next kiss onto her upturned lips.
“That’s true.”
I kiss her again. “Our happily ever after is the only one that matters to me. And some day, I’ll be asking you the same question he just asked her.”
Her mouth turns up as she initiates another kiss. “And when you do, I’ll say yes.”
