“Ohhh…” I say. “Well… I can’t exactly wear anything else,” I point out. “I have nothing else. You, on the other hand, have tons of dresses. And you look phenomenal in all of them. Just pick another one.”

“But I had my heart set on the red one,” she whines. “I even picked out the perfect shoes… just bought them.”

Every once in a while, Cassie can be… Well, there’s no other way to put it… She acts like a spoiled little brat sometimes. And as much as I try to be nice, I’m no doormat either. “Well, I’m wearing the red dress and the shoes, and you wear whatever the hell you want. But I would suggest picking something else because we’ll look pretty odd walking in together if we’re both wearing red.”

She takes a step back. “I guess you’re right,” she concedes.

Silence fills the cabin for a long painful moment. It’s eerily quiet, save for the zoom-zoom sounds Christian is making.

“Well, I should get going,” she says. “Lots to do today.”

Cassie never has ‘lots to do’ on her days off. She’s just mad at me. I decide to let it slide. I understand where she’s coming from. She’s used to being the one who gets all the attention, and now here I am, the object of a beautiful man’s attentions, and a hot rich one at that. Not to mention that dress and the shoes. She’d kill for a designer dress like that. And those heels made her do a double-take.

“See you soon,” I say. “I look forward to Saturday.”

She reaches for her wedges and slips them back on. She quickly grabs her purse off from the floor. “Me too,” she says, but she’s not smiling.

I step outside on the deck, and see her off. I wave goodbye as she disappears into her car, wondering if I’ve just messed up our friendship. But on second thought, I figure that if our friendship can’t survive something as silly as this, it’s not much of a friendship at all.
