Chapter Eight

When I wake the next morning, I'm disoriented. I’m tucked comfortably under the white duvet. The blinds have been drawn, but the room is still bright.

Where am I? Yes, the candy room. My first instinct is to grab some candy. I get up and help myself to some M&Ms. Where is Colton? Nowhere in sight. I'm still wearing my dress, sans heels.

I grab my heels, and visit the powder room nearby. I then set out to go search for him in this giant mansion. Good luck to me. As I reach the main level, I head towards the windows looking over the lake and yes, there is a spectacular sunrise. I never see this from my home. Our little shack sits high up on a hill, buried in trees, not facing the sun.

“It's quite beautiful out here in the early hours,” he says. “Good morning.”

I turn to him, and he looks just as sensational in sweats and a white t-shirt as he did the night before. But this must all stop here. Somewhere else is my real life.

Enough with these Cinderella shenanigans.

“Good morning,” I reply very politely.

“How did you sleep?”

“Perfect… like a rock.” It’s true. I was completely out.

“Can I get you some breakfast?”

“No, thank you,” I reply. “I should really get going. I should get home to Christian.” I glance at the clock. It's about six in the morning. Yes, I should definitely get going and relieve Nicole. “Well, thank you so much,” I say. “I had a lovely night.”

He smiles. “Me too.”

It's all so very awkward. I don't want to ask him when I should expect my payment. I would never. Instead, I just sprint off like a criminal. He runs after me as I head to the main entrance.

“Will I see you again?” he asks.

Uh…

“I don’t know. Maybe…”

He smiles. “I hope so.”

Thankfully, I feel well enough to drive back home. I slip on my heels, and we exchange a quick hug as we say our goodbyes.

When I get to my car I realize I’ve scuffed a heel. They’re Cassie’s shoes, and I hope they weren't expensive.

When I get home, Christian is super happy to see me, and he wraps me in a big tight bear hug. This moment right here is why I do it all for him.

"How was your night?” Nicole asks, a playful twinkle in her eye.

“Oh, you wouldn't believe it,” I say.

She grins. “Sound interesting.”

“Thanks so much for looking after Christian. You’re the best.”

“And don’t you forget it,” she jokes. “It was fun. Christian is so sweet. We had a great time, didn’t we, Christian?”

He smiles wide. “Yeah, we did. But I still missed you, Mommy.”

Aww…

“I missed you too, sweetie.” And with that, we share another hug, and Nicole leaves us to change out of her pajamas and head home.
