“And she seems too sweet to hitchhike, too goody-goody,” Trisha says. “I think the lie is the balloon story.”
“Me too,” Sarah chimes in.
“I disagree,” Colton says, and all heads turn to him. “There’s no purer heart out there. Clara would never, in a million years, steal from a homeless person. I think that’s the lie.”
“Well, you know her better than we do,” Annabelle says. “So maybe you’re on to something.”
“I think I am,” he says. “So which is it, Clara? Which one is the lie?”
My face breaks into a wide smile. “You’re right. That’s the lie.”
Everyone applauds him, and I smile bashfully, glad to finally be out of the spotlight.
