I pulled Miles into my chest, his back to my front, wrapping an arm over his stomach as I held him close. Placing my palm on his chest, I closed my eyes. His heart beat steadily against my hand, the sound like a beautiful lullaby pulling me toward sleep.
"Would it be bad if we locked ourselves in here for the next few days?" Miles asked, his palm running up and down my thigh.
"Well, we'll have to stash some food here first."
Miles hummed, then glanced back at me. "I don't think Mateo would let us get away with it."
I snorted because Miles was right. Mateo would never let us hide away in here for a few days. And honestly, I didn't think we would enjoy doing that, at least not after the first day. There was a reason the three of us were mates. We worked as a unit, and I didn't think any of us could function without our third.
"Maybe we can go away for a weekend sometimes? The two of us?" I suggested, and Miles brightened.
"That could be fun. Is there any place in particular you'd like to see?"
I shrugged, thinking back on all the places I'd learned about since coming here. "I can't think of anything in particular, but I would like to see more of this world. I spent so long living a half-life. I want to experience the real thing now. Visit new places, eat new things, all of it."
"Then that's what we'll do."
"Maybe we can all go for some trips, and make it the two of us for others?" I suggested, because the thought of traveling all over the world while Mateo stayed here didn't sit well with me.
"That sounds much better. We'll talk to Mateo about it later. We might have to work around his schedule if he decides to take over the haunted house," Miles reminded, and I hummed.
"Anyway—" I started as a yawn broke loose, making Miles chuckle.
"We should get some sleep."
"That's what I was going to say," I said with a laugh, squeezing him to me. "Goodnight, Miles. I love you."
"Love you, too, Duckie. Sweet dreams," he replied, and I sighed as I let my eyes fall shut.
